While not without its problems, I've taught this book several times now in my anthropology courses. It's a compelling book. The ethical, methodological, and epistemological challenges make for great discussions in class. My biggest complaint-- by far the most interesting and thought provoking part of the book is the almost ignored methodological "note" in the back of the book. This "note" is longer than several of the chapters and is CRITICAL to the book. Why does Goffman try to hide it at the end. You must read the "note" to really understand the whole book and Goffman as an ethnographer. I hope in subsequent editions it is upgraded to chapter status and placed toward the front of the book.

I really was awed by this book (and am puzzled by what one reviewer (below) has written). Goffman herself came from a privileged and educated background and chose to live for six years (on and off, but I think mostly on) in a poor, black, run-down, and drug-infested area in Philadelphia. One of her main interests was the interaction of police and dropout males from this district. How do children grow in unsafe environments? What happens when there is so much policing brought into the lives of young people? She also contrasts kids who grow up dirty and who grow up clean. She talks about the repetitive violence from drugs and guns (and fists or baseball bats or bricks into car windows), the ties that bind these families together (or forces that stress them apart), the lives of the genders, motherhood, girlfriend-hood, and problems of being a short, pretty white girl in an entirely black area.I am no expert, but I think this will be a classic ethnography in American anthropology and sociology.There are some things that Goffman does not talk about, but these were beyond the charge of her research. Specifically, while the presence of police brutality is documented, I was left curious about how the young police officers were inculcated into this blue culture. What holds their "blue family" together? What do police officers do with their fear (other than try to "take control")? At what point of induction into being a police officer does fear and stereotypy become the motif of life?Add (9-30-18) I did find a good book on this question: Moskos, Peter (2008) Cop: My year policing Baltimore's Eastern District. Princeton Press. Available on Amazon. Moskos graduated from college and joined the Baltimore police force as a rookie. He is scathing about his six-month training, which taught him nothing outside of legal strictures and how to write reports. One of his observations is how police cars detract from getting to know a neighborhood, but all police hate foot patrolling (it is hard, no computers, no flashing lights, seen as a punishment) and thus police really do not know the people of the area. The final chapter is "Prohibition: Al Capone's revenge," a comment on how prohibition actually makes the border between police and the people far more difficult than would legalized drugs and medical care.

This book is horrible. The author calls herself a researcher while engaging in abhorrent, unethical research practices. Her focus on low-income black men who are involved in crime feels like a beleaguered stereotype. As an educated upper-class white woman, this story was not Goffman’s to tell. This book has earned her profit and credibility in her field; she has profited off of black suffering. Do not buy this book.

This book is interesting and thought provoking. I work in the field, and this book made me realize things that never occurred to me. It is obviously not all encompassing but she did good work here.

Goffman repeats herself constantly throughout the entire book and the stories are written as if they were being told from a child. I had to read this for a Sociology class and gave the book away when I was finished.

Fascinating account of research. Recommended for those who want to see an extreme example of research in the field.

It was an interesting book learning about the experiences but felt like the author only blamed the police instead of the individuals. Either a balance or simply stating the facts would have been better in my opinion.

As a middle class American, I have a hard time getting past, "Why don't they just . . ." People on the whole make rational choices including the American poor. This book give the back story - aa must read for understanding poverty today.

Easy to read in a way that helps me understand the nuts and bolts of Spring. I'm a computer programmer with experience in almost all areas of business applications so it's good to read about new technology (well new to me anyway).

Two stars for printing quality. I don't want to lower the rate without reading it through, but I came to here immediately after I saw the printing quality. It's awful. The letters are so vague. Not sure if I got a fake one.

Compared to "Beginning Spring" by Mert Caliskan, this is a MUCH better book. The examples are more substantial, and the coverage of how to go about building enterprise class applications with Spring is far more substantial.I would have given this book 5 stars, but for two areas that I really wanted more information:1) Building and consuming REST services with Spring - I think the section covers it, but it only just.2) Using spring-boot - Again, the final chapter could have stood a little more detail, and I'd like to have seen some of these concepts woven in earlier in the book, although I understand why that was not possible.All in all, a very comprehensive book for software engineers who have to build real-world commercial applications with Spring.

Can be a little confusing with how the structure of the book was written. Written in a top down approach.The first chapter might be confusing for first time spring developers, but power through it and you'll see the author starts with the hard way of doing things first, then eases you into the current/easier way of developing in Spring.

I bought this book to teach myself Spring since the company I was working for at the time was moving towards the Spring Framework. However, I have switched jobs to a new company and have stopped going through this book. My review will be based on the first few chapters only and my initial impressions.Pros:Overall I think the author does a good job of explaining how Spring works, the different ways of doing things (i.e. Java vs XML), and also providing solid examples. He also does a good job of explaining the concept behind Spring and why you should use it. Craig does a good job of explaining things in a clear and concise manner. You don't need a dictionary next to you while reading this book which I have experienced with other textbooks that attempts to teach you Spring. You get a free pdf version of the book which I really like. I had two monitors and so I could read the pdf version as I worked on the examples and labs all at the same time. You can download all of the solution to the labs which is helpful if you get stuck.Cons:This book is not for the novice developer. Some of the more important skills that you will need before diving into this book is having a solid fundamental of Java and dependency management. During some of the labs and examples, I found that I was missing certain Spring classes and had to manually add Spring dependencies to my project. This always took some time to do research on what I needed to import into my project. I used maven for my dependency management and just had to simply modify my pom file to import any missing dependencies. I think some of the labs and examples might be wrong too but I believe the solution you download is updated with the correct code.

Complete Disappointment:After searching for weeks for a nice book for learning spring, I somehow decided to buy this one, mainly due to 100,000 copies being sold. I have completed two parts which covers spring core and spring AOP and I am appalled by the content. It is neither engaging nor comprehensive. I thanked myself since I have already covered these topics from YouTube, so was able to understand pretty much everything, otherwise the content is so obscure, that it is impossible for a beginner to learn spring using this book. Here are the top drawbacks based upon my experience.i.) You have to be 100% attentive to read this book, you lose your attention for 10 lines and you will not understand the whole section. Those who like Head First series will die trying to complete this bookii.) The book is not engaging at all.. Unless you are fresh in the morning after a 8 hour sleep, it is hard to read 5 pages at a stretch. One of the reviews posted on the back cover praises the writer for his humorous style, I am not sure, how much he got paid for saying so.iii.) Plenty of mistakes and they are not grammatical.iv.) eBook is partially in color telling us that even though publisher is charging people $47, it still is cutting costs by selling the book in black and white version, typical Manning.v.) Last but not the least: If you want to learn spring, this book is not for you.Advantages:i.) The book's coverage is vast, it covers nearly every aspect of spring, people often say, spring is vast, so is this book.ii.) If you a spring expert and want a book that can be referred for any spring related topic, you can buy this.iii.) You get an eBook for free with printed version, which is partially in color.

WOW. What a great book and is worth a read. It’s sincere and everything that you would hope it would be. There are two aspects to this book, one is a candid conversation between a mother and a son, and the other is…well, a lot of the family gossip. It mirrors the conversations that many people hope that they have once in their lifetime with their own eldest family member, when they themselves are adults.It is a conversation, but done in the style of Anderson Cooper, almost being his own investigative journalist regarding his own family. However, unlike situations in which Cooper simply asks questions and keeps moving, he discusses his own responses, his own feelings, and explores elements from his own background and experiences. A great example is Cooper mentioning how he was afraid to tell his mom he was gay because of being afraid of how she would react because of the rumors that her own mother was gay. Instead the mother essentially responds with, “Yeah, I knew, all your friends were gay,” and does the motherly thing of refocusing on the question of her son regarding her own mother and discusses her mother’s sexuality and her own views on sexuality, which have changed over the years and views that it is fluid.There is also some really unique insights into the different family members, providing a history of each one as Anderson asks, going so far as to describe houses and ways that money was made. There is also a slight element of mother’s give a damn being broken at 91 and even letting her son know about sex and the firs time she no longer had to fake an orgasm, which was one of the attractive aspects of who she dated. This is also couched in the context on reflections of her own insecurities being a young girl and growing up, as well as why she stayed in some horrible marriages.The writing style of this book is easy and fluid. There are interjections in-between conversations that give a quick and easy reference to the backstory of a particular family member or some occasions of the family in general. There are also points where Cooper mentions that he watches a YouTube video that has a family member, or his mother, and it’s actually quite easy to look up that information and follow along. The responses of Cooper are often shorter, but pull in normal colloquialisms, something that shows a bit of a generational divide the two, such as YouTube; whereas his mother may respond with a quote, or just simply go off of the comment mentioned.Vanderbilt’s responses are much more elaborate, detailed, and a bit of a train of thought around an initial point Cooper asks and that his mother makes a winding way in telling a story, but this is for the best because it is in this portion you can see a lot of recollections about her life, where she has been, and her understanding in hindsight. There is a lot of brutal honesty as well, such as her own insecurities early in life, acknowledgement she probably was not the best parent, recognition that she and Cooper probably would have been closer if he was a daughter, the death of her husband (Cooper's father), and later the death of Coopers brother, Carter (her son).A great book all around, it gives insight into the family’s meeting of one another, Coopers’ own father, and clarifications on his own understanding of family gossip from years of growing up. There is a lot that may mirror experiences that some adults have been fortunate enough to have snippets of with a family member, but is the extended version of insight into a family that probably has a lot more gossip and rumors surrounding it than one’s own and a few more trips to Europe on whims than most people experience in a lifetime.

I love this book. I live in the Palm Springs desert and have always looked up to Anderson. My Mother and I had a very good relationship, but cancer took her away at 79. I just loved the exchanges between Anderson and Gloria. It was touching on so many levels. I am also a gay man and my Mother was very supportive me of as well. I was a teacher for 39 years. I would give this book and its two authors an A++ !!!Ray M. Smythe

No matter how close we are to our parents (as I was to my father who passed away last year at 98) there are still things not said and subjects not fully probed. For example my father had an older brother who like Rosemary Kennedy was born retarded due to a birth accident and also like her was lobotomized and placed in a facility. Although I was nine when he died I never met him and my father and I never really talked about it (though it was always on his mind).After almost losing his very famous (and very illustrious) mother Gloria Vanderbilt just before her 91st birthday, news anchor Anderson Cooper embarks on his toughest interview via a year-long email exchange. They discuss everything (sometimes to the point of exhaustion): her very tough childhood (including the famous custody trial); her four marriages (Anderson was her last child by her last husband); his father’s sudden and tragic death when Anderson was 10 and how he and his mother began the process of forming a long-overdue mother-son relationship; Anderson’s sexuality (a subject totally missing from his original memoir); and most tragically his older brother’s suicide.I recommend this book with reservations. While touted as an unscripted email exchange it does not read that way. Gloria tends to explain events with so much background (many of which were already covered in her many autobiographies) that one wonders why Anderson Cooper, an award-winning newsman, did not already know about them. Plus there is so much repetitive detail that you really need a prior interest in both Gloria and Anderson to get through it. But many will find its unique approach both interesting and perhaps cathartic. Personally I wished I had this same exchange with my father.

Interesting premise for the book -- an interview conducted over the span of a year by Anderson Cooper with his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.I thought that the strongest part of the book was the life of Gloria from the time she was born until her first marriage. Considering that she had a childhood and teen years that were bereft of actual "family" -- as in -- a mother and father from whom she could receive love, care, guidance etc. it's amazing that her later life wasn't more messy than it was. It was definitely interesting to learn her feelings on the "trial of the century" and being known as the "poor little rich girl." It was equally interesting and I thought, quite honest of her, to admit that when she grew older and attempted to "connect" with her mother that she found it impossible to do it because they literally did not know one another and could not find a way to discuss what had happened between them when the trial occurred and she was a child of ten caught in the middle of the situation between her mother and her aunt.I felt that the last section of the book was less compelling because it went away from actions and instead was more about philosophy of life, love etc on the part of Gloria. I thought that Anderson Cooper, too, was quite brave to step forward and speak about his own life considering that he is in the middle of living his life as a public figure on television whereas his mother is nearing the end of hers and it's not as difficult to speak about painful experiences once they have passed as opposed to when you are younger and still facing them each day.Overall it is an interesting book and I think that both parties tried to be as honest as possible in their responses and comments.Overall, I enjoyed the book

Wow what was I thinking. I should send it back, but again, I wasn't careful, and so, it will remain in the stupid file as a reminder.

This is an excellent book for Executives in all industries. Joe DeFeo has captured the essence of what is improtant for a business leader today. The chaprters are easy reading for airplane trips and spare moments. Chapter 4 regarding Quality Goals and Alignment with the Strategic Plan is particularly interesting, especially when typically 70% of corporate strategic plans are developed but not fully implemented!

A great read to help managers and executives understand the positive effects that quality improvement can have on their organizations. This is a condensed, shortened version of Juran's 6th edition of the Quality Handbook. What a great read!

This is an excellent book and would be helpful to any organization. A succint message for embracing quality and understanding what a leader's role needs to be.

It's a cute story and had potential to be great but fell short a bit in two areas. The basic story is fairly simple - our heroine, Miranda is housesitting for our hero Gianni's aunt when he needs a place to lay low from media attention for a couple of weeks. At the same time he wants to bond with his young son Liam, who spends virtually all his time in the care of nannies. After waking up in bed together (because he arrived so late and didn't notice her in the darkened room and she was too tired to notice) the sparks fly between the two adults while the young boy provides a humorous backdrop. It's a cute story with some romantic bickering, his learning to not be quite so hopeless with his son and a few dramatic misunderstandings. The ups and downs are well played as is the breakup before they find their happy ever after.It's a very cute story and worth a read but there are still a couple things that irked me just a bit which is why I gave it three instead of four stars. The first was the son disappearing too early in the book (for me) and not reappearing until the epilogue (though his wedding bit was very, very cute). The other was the amount of inner dialogue during some of the conversations, it could be two or three pages between lines in the conversation. Neither of these truly distract from the story though.

Miranda was house sitting and Gianni came into the house in the middle of the night with his young son and crawled into bed. He didn't realize he had got into bed with the lovely Miranda. The next morning when they met sparks were flying between the oh so handsome Italian and the feisty red head. But I have to tell you. I found the dialog hard to follow. I never warmed up to the characters, they were dull as dish water. As a matter of fact I never like Gianni at all. I really hated this book and I can't recommend it at all.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was not your typical harlequin formula with commanding arrogant hero and doormat heroine. I liked both Gianni and Miranda. I dont like to give spoilers but, it sometimes helps u decides whether or not to read a book.The one scene that totally ticked me off was when commitment phobic Gianni shuts the door in Mirries face after she tells him she loves him. This book was well written and thers lots of banter between the two h's.

If you are a long time Harlequin reader you will enjoy this short read. If you want a more in-depth romantic interlude look somewhere else.

Gianni is a single father to a sweet four year old. He travels to his aunt's house not knowing that his aunt is away and a house sitter in her place. Gianni bit off more than he could chew when embarking on his drive there and retires soon after arrival. However, he didn't count on the bed being occupied by another. Miranda had recently been hurt by her identical twin sister - stealing the man she had wanted for herself. Gianni has his own baggage. They are drawn to one another and before you know it have set up an arrangement that seems slightly FWB like. Soon Gianni decides that his baggage is more than he can handle and he uses his son's emotional well-being as an excuse to push away from Miranda.Why is it that the H's pain is ALWAYS more than the h's and he gets to hold on to it longer? Gianni doesn't always abide by the rules he set forth and Miranda doesn't think it odd to not visit him in the city. So she does. She discovers him w/ OW, but she still puts herself out there for him. Gianni sees her in her vulnerability and shuts the door on her face! Of course, he hurts her and realizes two months later that he is constantly missing her. He tracks her down w/ the help of that twin sister of hers and attempts to make things right. Did I buy it? Honestly, I didn't care that much. For some reason I found this story didn't grab me much. Perhaps it was the whole waking up in bed together w/out ever knowing Gianni had climbed in w/ her.

Though obviously written by an amateur writer, the tale itself is chilling and emotionally charged. Writing it from the perspective of the girl took guts, even if at times it made me squirm in discomfort. The ending was a bit odd, but the story itself was well worth the money.

KatieLynn sure had to endure lots of abuse from her father and doing so because she felt unloved by her mother then not wanting to lose her love from her father. #emotionalread

For the most part, was a really good read. And quite believable. However, the book ends quite abruptly. I felt that the author could have written at least a few more pages to neatly tie up the whole story.

It was creepy but a fast read to see what happened. Ended completely strange. Written like a child was writing it. I'm glad I only spent .99 cents on it. Anymore than that would have been a waste of money.

Great book. Totally turned me on! Best read on a kindle so that you can highlight and save the best parts.

The story is ok; there seems to be something missing but i cannot put my finger on what it is. I am not crazy about the ending but i understand what she did.

This book started off great, it was really good until the ending. Although it was a pretty good read, I hate books that end the way this one did. I wouldn't recommend this book to my Friends.
