Shockingly, so. For example, a so-called "The History of Hip Hop" book by an author named Reese is composed of 114 pages in paperback.But, I've been looking for a new, comprehensive book on its history for years.....and I'm STILL looking for it.“Chuck D presents This day in rap and hip hop history†is over 300 pages with its primary and almost sole focus being on album/CD releases.And, if you didn't know it, you would have thought that the author was only 30 years old. Why? Because of the extremely heavy concentration on the 2000's and later. When the music and the images have gotten WORSE (if not, the profits)The 2000's and beyond period literally takes up half of the book (over 150 pages). For comparison purposes, the sparsely covered 10 year period from 1973-1983 has and is shamefully represented by a total of 12 pages.....and half of these pages are portrait pictures.So, 6 pages of text on the earliest years of the art form. When the foundation was created by the pioneers and made it possible for those afterwards to get rich and make their millions (while these past individuals contributions have been largely forgotten other than by those most knowledgeable.)Disappointing when you consider that one of the most respected and authoritative figures of the music is presenting (and representing) the book as “this day in rap and hip hop historyâ€. What you find within is a lot of "rap" history and not so much "hip hop".You will find useful facts but not nearly enough on the early years and individuals involved.Nelson George's "Hip Hop America" is a good book published years ago by an exceptional writer but much too brief in substance."The Vibe History of Hip Hop" is still, to this day, the best book on a topic without a lot of contenders. Which doesn't speak well for how the genre has been researched by writers over the years since this book was published in the last millennium (1999).
Very informative history of Hip-Hop for an old school fan like me but also an essential chapter in Black culture for those who love Hip-Hop today. While I am not a fan of most of the hip-hop that came out after 2000 I support the art if it still can be used to awaken the social conscience of our society. Chuck D will always be a hero to me along with KRS1.
My only complaint is I wish it didn't look like a textbook on my shelf. Has plenty of information that I never knew about...or had long forgotten. A great guide to keeping up with specific dates regarding hip-hop music releases.
