You can't get a better introduction to Earth sciences than this. It is told by way of the history of earth itself, starting with the Big Bang. It is beautifully designed, so that even a single pair of large pages offers a wealth of thought provoking information. Photographs, diagrams, history, text, are used in a consistent way for all of the many topics covered. The book has a detailed index, as well as in-chapter cross references. It also has something you almost never see--a to-scale timeline of all history--showing how very recent we and all we know are.
This is an incredibly beautiful book, and it is full of fascinating information about the world we live in. Though I bought this as a resource for homeschool, I have spent quite a bit of time just looking at it and enjoying it on my own. It's too advanced to teach from for second grade, but the pictures can speak to anyone if any age, and it will still be good in a few years for teaching. I highly recommend this book to anyone. You will not regret the purchase!
Yet another excellent reference from DK publishing and the Smithsonian Institute. I grew up with DK books covering various disciplines such as science and history as a child and I am quite certain that my children will now enjoy the full color illustrations and vast wealth of information these books provide.
You buy these for the knowledge they contain but as important is the ability to access the knowledge. The graphics, illustrations and photos are first rate.Chose carefully to get the latest edition as these do get useful updates
I'll admit - I'm a sucker for coffee table books. Especially this series of Smithsonian books from DK. I call them "channel surfing" books, in that you can pick one up, open any page, learn something and pick another random page, etc... Great stuff!
A lot of work went into the making of this very educational book. I have purchased a copy for my son-in-law and also, my daughter has her copy. It would be beautiful even if it were just placed on a coffee table, however when you open the cover a whole new world opens up in an easy to read and understandable style. Should anyone have a thirst for knowledge and a love of nature this is the book for him/her.
I checked out this book at the Library out of curiosity . Got home and looked through it. Ordered one from Amazon the same day. Answers all your questions about how our planet works,
Love these books. I have several of them. In a time when books are no longer needed. I still love to open them and take in the great photos etc.
