Review

“Their words speak for those who no longer have a voice. Their story will take the reader on a trip not soon forgotten of spirits unwilling to be broken.”—San Antonio Express-News“Their serious tone, broken by the occasional wry smile, memorializes their parents, the land and animals that wove the tapestry of their early childhoods… One reviewer called the book ‘deceptively understated,' But the soft plainness of the young writers' voices, combined with their moral insight, throws the surreal danger and strife into sharp relief.”—San Diego Union-Tribune“[They Poured Fire] is an amazing account of boys who managed to survive a terrifying ordeal… there's a kind of haunting beauty to their story… After reading this book, readers may feel like they've been on an adventure—or in hell, depending on your point of view. Whatever the case, this book is an eye-opener.”—Rocky Mountain News“A moving, beautifully written account, by turns raw and tender…”—Los Angeles Times“[The authors'] accounts, written first in lesson books and then on computer have been skillfully put together in a narrative, each boy carrying both history and that of their joint flight and reunion forward. The result is both fascinating and immediate, not least because of the guilelessness of the language and the particularly African use of metaphor and imagery….They Poured Fire…conjures up a world of marabou storks, acacia trees, termite mounds taller than men, scorpions and snakes that move in the dark, a world governed by traditions, rituals, seasons, weather, and obligations.”—New York Review of Books“[T]ender and lyrical…one of the most riveting stories ever told of African childhoods—and a stirring tale of courage….Anyone interested in Africa, its children or the human will to survive should read this book. This beautifully told volume…will remain on my desk for years to come.”—Washington Post“[L]ovely and unusual….[V]ital stories…that can help readers understand events in Sudan on a human level. But They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky is no mere historical document; it is a wise and sophisticated examination of the arbitrary cruelties and joys of being alive.”—Star Tribune“[T]he book is at once an important addition to the contemporary dialog on world affairs and a surprisingly lyrical account of coming of age under adverse conditions… These folkloric memories—replete with lions and circumcision rituals—describe a world centuries removed from the high-tech industrialization of Western society. But they years of war also have bestowed wisdom, and simple observations of childhood are seen now through different eyes…” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune“[The book] represent[s] genuine, heartfelt examples of what war does to young people and how they may adjust to life outside the country of their birth, especially the social and intellectual problems they experience.”—Deseret Morning News“In a harrowing account of the war, three young refugees in California… remember how they were driven from their homes in Southern Sudan in the ethnic and religious conflicts that have left two million dead. They tell their stories quietly with the help of their mentor, coauthor Judy Bernstein, in clear, interwoven, narratives that put a personal face on statistics.”—Booklist“[W]ell written, often poetic essays…this collection is moving in its descriptions of unbelievable courage.” —Publisher's Weekly

First off, I want to say that anyone looking for an autobiographical read should get their hands on this book!! This book explains the long, treacherous journey that these three young men were forced to embark on. Leaving their villages behind in Southern Sudan due to the Second Sudanese Civil War, these boys illustrate the hardships and difficulties they themselves endured as well as thousands of others. In search of refuge these three boys were split up multiple times until they all ended up in a camp in Kenya. Fortunately all three of these young men were able to fly to America where they became a part of a program called the Lost Boys of Sudan to have a new life in America. Unfortunately, many girls didn't make it because they were usually in the house whereas boys were usually out in the fields and were able to escape once the war broke out. I highly encourage all to read this book!!

I became involved with a group like this from 2000-2004. It is an amazing act of courage to tell the story. The stories in this book parallel stories my friends told me first hand. The assistance they received upon arrival was desperately inadequate. Most found horrible minimum wage jobs. Many moved around from job to job without much stability. And I would say although very charming, most were unable initially to be valuable employees. They needed much more than just a few months or weeks to adjust.I remember going into an apartment in the winter and realizing they hadn't turned on the heat. Why? They didn't know it existed. They didn't know how to draw the blinds. Or use the stove. They didn't know that there was hot and cold water... Important if you plan to shower in the winter especially. And despite that, life was so much better than where they came from.Anything that increases the understanding of and compassion for these young men should be required reading..

This is a remarkable story about the strength of the human spirit. It gives one a better appreciation for the freedoms we have here in America. It is a story of faith having been tried by fire.I tells in gripping detail about the lives of 3 young boys escaping from the civil war in Sudan and all of the horrifying things they had to face on their escape southern Sudan to Ethiopia, and back and then to Kenya. They had to cross dangerous rivers and desserts, live in and out of refugee camps. Despite everything, they had to endure they managed to hang on to their humanity, sacrificing and helping others. The story even sheds some light on the unfortunate amount of corruption that prevents a lot of humanitarian aid from reaching those in need. After reading this one simply cannot help being so impressed with the boys' courage and perseverance in the face of everything happening to them.

I am in 9th grade and i was forced to read this book for honors english, and honestly I'm glad I was forced. The book is so inspiring and interesting as they talk about their years of walking not knowing if they were going to die the next day. It teaches you not to take anything for granted not your house, your family, food, even personal items. It also teaches you about the horrible war happening in sudan. I recomend that you purchase this book and learn about people who have almost nothing but still have hope in their sad world.

This book contains an amazing story- one ALL older children should read and adults as well. Seeing what these LITTLE boys as well as all the other Sudanese people went through will shock you and hopefully change the way you think about things. We complain about so many little things like the crack in our iPhone screen, or gas prices, or the fact that they are out of our favorite ice cream. These boys were surrounded by death, fear, poverty, and terrible conditions during a time of unspeakable terror for many people. They endured hardships and came out the other end and are creating a better life for themselves. The way they wrote their stories makes the book an easy read although it may bring tears to your eyes!! I have rotated it between each of my teenage children- knowing they need to see what life can be like for some many others. READ this ... It will be a story that will stay with you forever...

The content of this book is awesome. It really does break down complex systems and put them in to a conceivable amount of knowledge. The only problem is the layout is terrible. I have to ignore at the extra bubbles and bullets to understand where the book is going. Too much on each page with not enough description of how the figures play in to the discussion.

Concise and easy to read description of a common method for managing.

I love that its getting me one step closer to graduation!

This neat little pocket book has lots of practical tools. I specially recommend the chapters on change. If you're interested in the subject, Steven Haines' company offers white papers for free download...

This pocket guide is useful as a pocket guide. That is, it provides a wealth of quick summary information on a variety of core topics in the systems thinking domain. If you already have a good grounding in systems thinking, then paging through this guide will be a good refresher. Without a prior knowledge of the material, I don't think this guide provides enough detail for application. In terms of recommendations, this would be a good tool to refresh an experienced systems thinker or as a companion guide to a student using a more in-depth textbook.

I really enjoyed this piece. I thought that it was a great tool for truly grasping the concept of systems thinking. I feel as though I was able to become a more developed leader after reading this text. I plan on using it in my trainings.

Having read Haines' "The Complete Guide to Systems Thinking & Learning," I was glad to see a shorter, easy to use guide. What I liked most about this guide is the simple models & guideline boxes. How much simpler can it get than having someone remind you how to use the models or ask you the questions necessary to put theory into practice? In my opinion, this pocket guide is a great fit for today's "time crunching" managers.

Apart from the number of typos which I got distracted by (maybe someone forgot to run the book through spell check) the book is definitely just a pocket guide that takes some general systems thinking concepts to support a traditional top down strategy development & change management approach. Topics such as emergence and self organization appear to be missing.
