Even though this book was written by lawyers, there are a few places where I wish it went into more detail. Nonetheless it serves as a great starting point for some topics and provides invaluable insight on others.It has definitely earned a place on my desk as I find myself referring to it often as questions regarding my work come up. At the very least it is helpful when aiming to educate yourself before the need to consult an attorney arises and in some instances eliminates the need completely-- saving you time and money!
When I started writing, I never thought about the legal implications of what I was doing. This book opened my eyes and made me realise that I needed to change my attitude and adopt a more business approach if I wanted to succeed. So much information! A perfect gift for any author!

This book was suggested by the Author's Guild (not to be confused with the Writer's Guild which only deal with screen writers) in my area. It is designed to be a reference to help writers avoid legal pitfalls and not a book to sit down and read. It appears to be well organized which is mandatory for reference materials.
A quick study that provides a good background but does not take from the need for legal advice on your specific issues.
It's not enough to make the proper decisions but it's a lot better than nothing when you're trying to parse a contract or avoid libel
"The Writer's Legal Guide" came just in time for me to review tax information for writers just prior to sending off my yearly tax return. Although this is my third year as an author to file taxes, I learned quite a bit of useful information from this book that helped me this year in filing. Another issue that I had been concerned with is dealt with in the last chapter on estate planning, wills for authors. I have found it difficult to find information on this subject elsewhere, so I was happy to find an entire helpful chapter devoted to it.The best thing about this book is that it includes exactly what words to use in legal author matters such as do it yourself wills and letters, as well as many sources on legal questions for authors, including websites that are helpful.
