I am disappointed in the quality of this book. This book has highlighting all over the book. It ia also has been written in it. There is water damage. I dont feel it matches the discount for the used price

Although the wait was exruciatingly long (if just for the WANT OF THIS BOOK!), I've rarely been as pleased with finding a package on my porch! Incredible craftsmanship, and the book itself with its gold leafing on the cover, binding, interior pages, makes it seem very old fashioned and Victorian and major kudos there! I conduct most of the major tours in Savannah's Bonaventure Cemetery and this will be such an asset for visual reference and can't wait to tell ALL of my clients about it! Nifty little page details throughout and very user friendly. I can already tell that I will never get rid of this book and is already a permanent piece of my growing collection of such morbidity! Thanks Jack Mord!

An absolutely beautifully done book, inside and out. A must for people like myself who love the macabre, death portraits, or just eccentric things in general. Well-bound, lots of thought-provoking photographs. All I can think to write is Bravo! Well done!Word to the wise....books of this nature are always done in limited printings and releases, so this is probably going to go out of print soon. It will either be impossible to find or the price of the existing copies will skyrocket. As a mortician I wish it wasn't this way but it is. Death is not taboo, it should not be shunned or hidden, nor is it something to be frightened of.

I absolutely love this book. I'm buying it as a gift for someone, which makes me sad. I might have to buy myself a copy to keep.If you aren't familiar, momento mori is (I think) Latin and means "remember that you have to die". The Victorians were using the fairly new medium of photography to do something that no one in history had done before: Keep their loved ones with them for eternity.Thankfully, the book is divided into sections. Memento mori was most popularly used with dead children, so you can skip that chapter if it makes you uncomfortable. There's also a chapter on adults and pets.This book is beautifully compiled, excellently written, and delves into the Victorian fascination with death. Absolutely love it.

this book is stunning. it arrived yesterday afternoon and i spent most of my evening with it and part of today as well. true that it is somewhat grotesque but some of the photos...the ones of the children are so pathetically loving that it is almost palpable. the pet section is also affecting. the book is informative and intelligently written by mr mord and his associates. it is respectful of the pictured dead and does not demean them in the least. if you had a higher than five star rating i would assign it. i am chastened and amazed by this book.

I just received this book and was immediately disappointed. Unfortunately, the font used is extremely small and difficult to read. The choice of gray print on dark pages only makes the readability worse. So while the pictures are a good resource for those with an interest in thanatology, it will take a lot of effort to decipher the printed material that accompanies them. I understand the author was probably going for a particular feel, or motif, with the color combination invoking a vintage nuance, but in making the text very difficult to read, one would think they would opt for a different combination. Perhaps they were going for the reader having the impression death was settling in upon them and their eyesight was growing dim. :-) I believe the same could have certainly been accomplished with a larger font and different color.

The pictures are wonderful and the added commentary really helps to understand why certain practices came about. The only issue I had, and at this point it's more just nitpicking than anything, was that one of the pictures, the one about the entire family being murdered except for the baby girl, was too big for the page. The commentary noted that the killer was in the photograph (before they knew he was the killer) and he was marked with an "x" above his head. Because of the size of the picture, he was located almost in the crease of the book. If i hadn't properly opened and stretch the books' binding, I'm pretty sure it could have broken trying to find this guy in the crease. Also, it wasn't mentioned but the baby girl that survived had an "x" on her gown. Like I said, this is just nitpicking and only occurs on one picture. I would definitely buy it again.

Absolutely incredible and important wealth of photographs. The most lavish book I have seen on any topic printed in the last 100 years. The cover, interior and gilding will absolutely blow away your expectations. The only portion I had trouble with, and trust me - I am hard as diamonds but when I got to the section of deceased pets, it became a bit harder to proceed. Regardless, this is a 5-star purchase, crafted with care and respect, not for uncultured "gore hounds" seeking a shock. This is a true work of beauty and would be at home beside any of Paul Koudounaris' books.

The book is beautiful, sad and heartbreaking. These people loved their friends and family so much, and you can feel in these photos. The book itself is beautifully designed and I love the flowers and gold foil on the cover. What I like about this books is that it gives additional information on the individuals in the pictures, how they died, who they were, and information about that era. For example, I'd never heard of Victorian charm strings before this book! I also enjoyed the newspaper articles included with some of the pictures.This book is fantastic!

Mattie after given a chance to better herself did just that.She ended up giving her children an education & owning a whole town. She grew in every way learning how to read & write & learn math. Forbeing a widow with 3 children was not an easy task in this wild but beautiful country. The story had some twists & surprises.

What a story this is! Australia at it's time of the gold rush. A amazing story of life then. Mattie was truly great and brave person to live the life she did. I highly recommend this to everyone. You will love it. I did!!

Set in the time of Charles Dickson, it is sad, as is Oliver twist. However, it showed how the convicts managed to settle Australia along with a few People from England who were drawn by the idea of a great adventure, and how the convicts got along with many of the other immigrants.

This is a good yarn but, as I realized later, the writing style would rather be aimed at pre- teenage girls than at adults, The story itself is very informative of conditions at that time, both in Ireland as well as in Australia

Not what I was expecting about a Australian convict story. Had too much religious overtones for me.

Mattie's story is full of the history and customs of that time in Australia. It's a page-Turner with wonderful characters

Dr. Wills' analysis of Southern Baptist democratic religion was extremely helpful in giving me a better context for denominational polity and the moral/theological erosion of SB denomination with the increase of urbanization and bombardments of a pervasively progressive culture.

Good historical information and some interesting tidbits and accounts from early American church life. If you are into lots of statistical information you will love this book...but if not, you will find it tedious.

Dr. Greg Wills has produced an important work documenting how Baptist churches in the South functioned between 1785-1900. If you are interested in the topic, especially how gender and race affected church governance or how church discipline was carried out, then grab a copy of this book.My one warning is that you shouldn't expect this to be a page-turner. Wills has tediously documented this data by pouring through the minutes of church business meetings from the time period, and the work reflects that. It is a lot of numbers and dates and at times seems repetitive, but Dr. Wills is documenting the evidence that he found through what I can only imagine was a ton of man hours. Expect this going in and enjoy the book for what it is and you will find it very helpful

I believe that Willis wrote this book to explore the reasons for the Baptist church and where its identity was. When reading it, I felt that Willis has some ill will towards the Baptist denomination for its exclusivism and its tendency to discipline its members. I did not feel antagonism towards Baptists, but more of a negative view of how the church did what it did in discipline.I think as he moved on in the book, and as the church tolerated more and changed into a 21st century denomination, he likened up to the church more and more. At the end, his view of the Baptist church is a positive one and sees that its history was necessary for where the church is today. He wants his readers to see the good and the bad of church discipline and show where holding to those convictions take you. He respects the church in the end for holding to their guns on freedom, authority, and discipline, even if those are different from what they were in the 18th century.In his own way, he wanted to dispel the notion that the Baptist church and its beliefs is archaic and has no right to be in the discussion. He does a good job explaining why the Baptist church holds to its beliefs and why they do not sway on certain issues.

The research in this book is impressive and makes for a fascinating read. Wills argues that the Baptists in the south resisted the influence of modernism and maintained the purity of their churches by practicing biblical church discipline.There are a lot of lessons to be learned from the book that have bearing on contemporary issues. These Baptists, like many churches today, had to battle against the temptation to do let pragmatism reign in ministry. The Baptists resisted for awhile but many ended up losing the battle in the early 20th century.Even if you don't like what these Baptists did, the book is informative and insightful.
