About the Author

James J. Mazza, PhD, is Professor in the College of Education at the University of Washington, where he teaches and conducts research in the field of adolescent mental health. Dr. Mazza’s research focuses particularly on adolescent internalizing disorders, such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, exposure to violence, and, especially, suicidal behavior. His work also examines the complex relationships among adolescent mental health issues, social–emotional abilities, and academic skills through multi-tiered systems of support. Dr. Mazza has written extensively on how to identify youth who are at risk for suicidal behavior, as well as on how to develop social–emotional learning (SEL) curricula to help all students learn emotion regulation skills. He has worked with over 30 school districts and thousands of school personnel in developing and implementing comprehensive school-based suicide identification and prevention strategies for adolescents. Dr. Mazza also provides consultation and training to school personnel internationally on implementing DBT STEPS-A in schools, on developing mental health intervention services within multi-tiered systems of support, and on integrating SEL curricula as a part of a school system’s role in educating the whole child. He is the coowner of a private practice in Seattle, Washington. Elizabeth T. Dexter-Mazza, PsyD, is the co-owner of a private practice in Seattle, Washington, where she conducts comprehensive dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and skillsbased coaching for adolescents and adults and provides parent coaching and support to family members and friends of individuals with emotion dysregulation. Dr. Dexter-Mazza provides training and consultation to schools, mental health agencies, and individuals in implementing DBT skills and therapy. She is also a trainer for Behavioral Tech, a company that offers DBT trainings to mental health professionals around the world. Dr. Dexter-Mazza completed her postdoctoral fellowship under the direction of Marsha M. Linehan at the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics (BRTC) at the University of Washington. She served as Clinical Director and a research therapist at the BRTC for Dr. Linehan’s research studies, which provided both individual DBT and DBT group skills training. Dr. Dexter-Mazza has published several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on DBT, borderline personality disorder, and graduate school training in managing suicidal clients. Alec L. Miller, PsyD, is Co-Founder and Clinical Director of Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants, White Plains and New York, New York, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York. He is a scientific advisor to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention and the National Educational Alliance of Borderline Personality Disorder, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, and past Chair of the International Society for the Improvement and Training of DBT. He has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and books on topics including DBT, adolescent suicide, childhood maltreatment, and borderline personality disorder. He is the coauthor of DBT® Skills in Schools, DBT® Skills Manual for Adolescents, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents. He has conducted over 400 lectures and workshops around the world, training thousands of mental health professionals in DBT.  Jill H. Rathus, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Long Island University Post, where she directs the DBT scientist-practitioner training program within the clinical psychology doctoral program. She is also Co-Director and Co-Founder of Cognitive Behavioral Associates, a group private practice in Great Neck, New York, specializing in DBT and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Her clinical and research interests include DBT, CBT, adolescent suicidality, intimate partner violence, anxiety disorders, and assessment. Dr. Rathus has developed and conducted programs in DBT for adolescents and adults as well as males referred for intimate partner violence, and has received foundation and university funding to study, adapt, and develop assessment tools for DBT. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters on DBT, adolescent suicide, couple therapy, intimate partner violence, personality disorders, assessment, and anxiety disorders. She is the coauthor of books including DBT® Skills in Schools, DBT® Skills Manual for Adolescents, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents. Heather E. Murphy, PhD, NCSP, has a private practice in Seattle, Washington, where she works with self-harming and suicidal adolescents. She is adjunct faculty in educational psychology at the University of Washington. Dr. Murphy previously worked as a school psychologist in elementary, middle, and high schools for 7 years. During that time, she developed districtwide procedures for intervening with suicidal youth and standard practices for responding to a suicide. Dr. Murphy’s research, publications, and clinical work focus on adolescent mental health, LGBT youth, and suicide intervention with adolescents.

excellent resource! STEPS A is the global Tier 1 approach for middleschoolers. AUthor has trained our school district- GREAT RESOURCE!!!

Excellent curriculum that can be used in the classroom with all students, in small groups, or individually with students meeting with their school counselors. There are numerous activity pages that work through important concepts related to learning to develop distress tolerance and use our emotions wisely and mindfully. A tool for "typical" students self-awareness and dysregulated students toolbox for self-regulation.

James and Liz Mazza have done a fabulous job bringing needed DBT skills to adolescents in schools. The kids won’t believe the almost immediate measurable results that they will find with practice. Their peers will hold them accountable for their homework too. The book is set up to help teachers every step of the way! I wish this class had been around when I was attempting to navigate through the junior high and high school years!

I was hoping for more stuff I could use with younger kids, but otherwise it is great!

I've been in love with F# for half a decade now. I've read 10 related books in their entirety so far, and am part-way through a few more.As a public speaker, I still read through new F# books in order to look into the author's brain a bit, and figure out how *they* structure the material and how *they* explain individual concepts.This book wins over the others (in my view) in a number of notable ways:- it has capstones. Reasonable projects for you to work on at various check-points.- it's pretty. just look at that cover- it doesn't give you the stuff you don't need to get started, but has a great glossary in the back where "hints" are given- it's present; frankly speaking, especially with regard to the web, F# programming has changed pretty significantly over the past few years. Pit and Funscript are out the door, WebSharper is still doing its thing, and Fable has made a huge appearance on the scene with the SAFE stack. Isaac is truly an insider of the F# world, and has presented just enough present-day context of where we're at. This point is most apparent, though in the back of the book (glossary or whatever) since he stays library-lessAll in all, this is my present-day recommendation for an F# book. If I change my recommendation to a different book in the future, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a second version of this one.

Isaac Abraham's "Get Programming with F#" is a well-structured, well-written guide to learning F# and its pragmatic blend of functional and imperative programming. By doing the exercises in Abraham's short, example-based lessons (43 lessons in all), you also get healthy workouts in using the F# features and tools in Microsoft's Visual Studio. The book is aimed at "intermediate C# and Visual Basic .NET developers" who have little or no experience with F#.A note of caution: The book focuses on Visual Studio 2015, and if you already are running Visual Studio 2017, you will encounter some differences in some menus, as well as Power Tools and other items. VS veterans will not have much trouble with this, but beginners to .NET, F# and Visual Studio may need help to get things set up correctly, if they have downloaded VS 2017.My gratitude to Manning Books for providing an advance reading copy for review.

This 575 page book tries to cover a lot of ground but it seemed that the author rushed to finish many of the later chapters. As a result many of the questions that this reader had about language feature details were not addressed, which was most frustrating. Admittedly, I am not exactly the target audience for this book since I have a decent grasp of Functional Programming, have very limited experience with C#, I'm using Visual Studio Code and I'm on Linux. The author assumes that you need to be introduced to FP, are a C# coder, using Visual Studio, on Windows. So a non-negligible page count is devoted to VS screen shots, "here's how you would do it in C#" sections, and the value of immutability, higher order functions, lazy eval, etc.. This may be of value to a few readers but I suspect it is largely book bloat to many.

This book was probably the only one that you could follow it and learn F# effectively. Before I read this book, I had tried to learn F# by other books, such as Beginning F#, Expert F#,... However, these book just were another form of official documents. Why functional programming is better than OOP? Why we need F# Record and Union? Why using partial application and pipe? No answer. They may be good references, but for learning F#, totally useless.The first 5 units of this book introduced every F# language feature with the reason that it overcome some restrictions of traditional OOP, in a crystal clear way. These materials let you know the advantages of F# and how to use F# to solve real work problems. The remained contents taught you how to work with .Net environment, and introduced some useful F# specified tools.If you want to learn F#, or would like to know whether F# is desired some considerations, this book is the only one you need to have.

Amazon won't show me as a verified buyer because my book was purchased via my company.I'm a seasoned C# developer since version 1.x (also proficient in using LINQ), still this book opened my eyes. What a fantastic book! Now my C# code is becoming much more functional!

If you've been looking to learn F#, this is the book to get. Although the subtitle describes it as a guide for .NET developers, don't let that fool you: with its friendly tone and many exercises, this book is an excellent introduction to F# for developers of all backgrounds and experience levels.
