A Poetry Handbook

Amazon.com Review

This slender guide by Mary Oliver deserves a place on the shelves of any budding poet. In clear, accessible prose, Oliver (winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for poetry) arms the reader with an understanding of the technical aspects of poetry writing. Her lessons on sound, line (length, meter, breaks), poetic forms (and lack thereof), tone, imagery, and revision are illustrated by a handful of wonderful poems (too bad Oliver was so modest as to not include her own). What could have been a dry account is infused throughout with Oliver's passion for her subject, which she describes as "a kind of possible love affair between something like the heart (that courageous but also shy factory of emotion) and the learned skills of the conscious mind." One comes away from this volume feeling both empowered and daunted. Writing poetry is good, hard work.

From Publishers Weekly

National Book Award winner Oliver ( New and Selected Poems ) delivers with uncommon concision and good sense that paradoxical thing: a prose guide to writing poetry. Her discussion may be of equal interest to poetry readers and beginning or experienced writers. She's neither a romantic nor a mechanic, but someone who has observed poems and their writing closely and who writes with unassuming authority about the work she and others do, interspersing history and analysis with exemplary poems (the poets include James Wright, William Carlos Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, Marianne Moore and Walt Whitman). Divided into short chapters on sound, the line, imagery, tone, received forms and free verse, the book also considers the need for revision (an Oliver poem typically passes through 40 or 50 drafts before it is done) and the pros and cons of writing workshops. And though her prose is wisely spare, a reader also falls gladly on signs of a poet: "Who knows anyway what it is, that wild, silky part of ourselves without which no poem can live?" or "Poems begin in experience, but poems are not in fact experience . . . they exist in order to be poems." As many 1-star reviewers have said, this book reads like "fluff", or in a time before the internet it might have been a helpful collection of definitions. I felt Oliver was being a cheerleader instead of a teacher. "Yay Poetry, yay team." If you want to know how she parses a poem, you don't get that here. I think this book is for the absolute, very-bottom beginner -- and I recognize that some people need a very gentle introduction to poetry, and that's okay -- but I guess I expected more. Help us understand how to scan a poem. What makes free verse like Williams' so intriguing? Something...something. Move along, these aren't the droids you're looking for.

One of America's best poets writes an amazing book about how to create poetry. Simply brilliant. Even if the reader has no intention of writing his or her own poems, this book is interesting and inspiring from a pure creativity mindset. One chapter in particular stuck with me (analysis of meter), and her breakdown of Robert Frost's "Stopping by woods on a snowy evening" was so impressive that I have actually shared what I learned with others. Highly recommended, especially for those budding poets among us.

I sooo did not want to teach my kids poetry! I had a wonderful teacher when I was in high school many years ago, but I have forgotten a lot. I almost skipped teaching poetry altogether, which would have felt like homeschool malpractice. I got this book based on Amazon reviews, and it has sat on the shelf for the past several months. I finally picked it up and read the first section. Short, very approachable, and very engaging. We have been working through the book bit by bit and have been gaining the confidence that, I believe, will eventually lead to actually writing poetry. The writing in the book is excellent, which is a powerful selling point for studying poetry. Where I was previously afraid of exploring poetry with my kids, I see that, for the education I have in mind for my kids, including poetry will be essential. I'm so glad I found this book!

Been writing poetry on and off and recently decided it was more of a calling than I made space for in my life. I'm not a slam poetry kind of person and I have no formal education in poetry. I sometimes feel as if I really don't know what I'm doing or why and follow my guts only (not a bad thing necessarily but it also felt limiting) . This book helped me to change my thinking about my work, in particular how important rhythm and line breaks can be, how purposeful.I still want to look at formal structures and do more self education but I found this to be accessible and informative in a way that addressed my needs pretty precisely.

“One of the difficult tasks of rewriting is to separate yourself sufficiently from the origins of the poem— your own personal connections to it. Without this separation, it is hard for the writer to judge whether the written piece has all the information it needs—the details, after all, are so vivid in your own mind, on the other hand, because of this very sense of ownership, the poem is often burdened with a variety of ‘true’ but unhelpful details.”*Mary Oliver’s A POETRY HANDBOOK is slim and powerful volume. She covers a ton of ground and uses examples to illustrate her points. This handy book discusses the use of rhetorical devices, sound, the line, a sampling of forms, free verse, diction, tone, voice, imagery, and revision, while weighing in on the use of imitation, solitude, and workshops. Oliver makes poetry accessible and encourages writers to experiment and play. While reading the book, I gave form to a poem that had been rattling around in my brain. The book is not intimidating, rather it provides inspiration and encouragement.*Oliver’s quotation can also apply to prose revision. It’s always good to remember the difference between what is written on the page vs. what resides in the writer’s head.

As an aspiring poet, I read Mary Oliver's "A Poetry Handbook" taking a seat as a student of poetry. I found it easy to capture key concepts, while learning the history of poetry technique and style. And, I gained an understanding of what's needed to write a poem that resonates with the reader. The book is more technical in approach and may leave others who are not interested in learning the mechanics of writing or studying poetry behind. Though, the point is well taken from Mary that "poetry lives through genius AND technique." She offers the value of handbooks, writing workshops, etc. as a support, while emphasizing that the poem requires of the writer "a patch of profound and unbroken solitude." This is and will always be the way you tap into your voice.

This book was extremely entertain. I loved how well it was put together, actually pulling me in and tickling my creative brain. I seriously enjoyed her writing style, realizing 3/4 of the way through, that I was reading a “how-to-book” for enjoyment.

I learned more from this book than I did in my college Poetry Writing and Creative Writing courses combined. Her words are easy to follow and they are placed in an order where one premise follows another. As a poet, the opportunity to learn from a master was one I could not pass up. And, learn I did.

Great info all teens should have access to. The world is a scary place and teens often feel so invincible, so untouchable and feel so at ease and safe online that they forget the same dangers (or worse) lurk online just like in the real world. Every person should know what seem like such simple rules for staying safe online, but so many don’t even think about them. This book is a must read for kids and parents both on how to stay smart and hopefully protected by following these rules while interacting and posting online.

Most families today are struggling with how to manage screen time and keep their kids safe while still allowing them to learn to use the rapidly changing technology at their fingertips. Dr. Saedi Bocci has created a practical, insightful workbook that can help our kids (and their parents) gain control and perspective on social media use and device use in general. She provides well thought out exercises to help her readers more mindfully manage time, set goals and rediscover the joys of living in real life. She also offers valuable ways to deal with the stress, anxiety and FOMO so common in today's chaotic world. I highly recommend this workbook for any family struggling to find balance in today's connected world. It would also be a very helpful resource for establishing "technology rules" before giving a child their first cell phone, computer or internet connected video game.

Dr. Saedi Bocci has shined the spotlight on the detrimental effects of chronic social media overuse on mental health, and has offered a user-friendly framework for actively reengaging with the world offline! Encouraging intentional activities such as “exercising without earbuds” and “getting bored on purpose”, Dr. Saedi-Bocci provides her readers with the hope and structure necessary to step away from the screen. As the parent of a young child, I found myself considering ways of implementing this valuable content at an even earlier age to instill the value of “IRL” experiences over virtual ones. I tip my hat to Dr. Saedi Bocci for developing such a timely, and much needed, resource for young people!

I can't wait to begin using this workbook with young clients. It is so user friendly and intuitive--which is perfect for this young generation who probably wouldn't have the interest or patience for a book that wasn't. The lessons are practical and straightforward. They are clearly laid out with examples to make them easy to implement. A nice bonus has been that after reading the book I saw what a useful tool it would be for me as a parent too! These days kids seem to come out of the womb with an iPad in their hands. I want my kid to have a life outside of a screen and I'm going to use this book's tips and advice to help do this. To be honest, I should probably implement some of Dr Saedi Bocci's lessons to balance my own screen time usage!!

This is an amazing workbook that I will definitely start using with my tween. Thanks to New Harbinger Publications, Inc. and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I have already recommended this workbook several times to my clients and their parents. Adults would also benefit from this workbook. Learn how to set appropriate boundaries regarding social media use, and limit your exposure to the drama that goes along with it. Your time management skills will improve, and you will have social media as a part of your life, not your whole life. Highly recommended.

This is my review from 5 day visit in Siep Reap/Angkor Wat National Park and its 2 single-day trips to its vicinity._____________Although Eyewitness series is the only source that I will take with my trips, and I have done so so loyally for over a decade, this is not the in-depth guide for any Siem Reap visitor, but just a good source for trip plans.Angkor Park/Siem Reap is just allocated as few as 35 pages of illustration and simple texts, and the history was not broadly informative, especially without any recent updates of political changes, or social perception, or even their current intense border disputes with neighboring countries of Thailand. And, I have no idea why it is heavily shared with its vicinity and Laos. Just imagine this guidebook is as sketchy as any thick single volume of Europe guidebook containing tens of country that barely describes the details or local interests of one country.Out of 35 pages, I only find one map was simple and useful, but the much needed vicinity map outside Siem Reap was missed, and I couldn't locate myself from a whole day trip to other temples beyond Angkor Park. Still it was within 2 hours, 60-70 mile radius, on a scarce asphalt road system.Other than that, the book doesn't describe any useful tip of the actual people or where to eat, or layout of the Siem Reap night town, which was as interesting as the ruins or Bali we had visited.I had to rely upon my off-line map on the smartphone and TA on-line, instead, but that is also limiting us only in WiFi area of the hotels. There will be a lot of updates necessary to make this book handy during the trip.

This is great guide to complement your trip planning. It has great maps from the temples in both countries and good standard info from the cities. However, it is not the most up to date guide.Great source of info for trip planning but i don't recommend and the only guide to buy.Lonely Planet has better guide with more practical information.

I always like DK eyewitness tour guide books.

item as described, smooth transaction

DK Eyewitness Travel is an EXCELLENT guidebook for wherever you travel in the world. Great photos. Easy to use before and during the trip. It also makes a great little reference book when you get back.

I cut this to take with me to these countries as I had too many guide books. These are always great guides

DK is one of my favorite travel guides. The many photos truly help me assess the appeal of a location/site. I just wish there was more effort to help develop an itinerary. EG how many days to spend in each location. However other guides do that and since there is no Kindle edition of the DK Guides, I'll be purchasing those to take with me.

I have no issues with DK Eyewitness Travel Guide series. It's the best that's available in the market. Just a bit heavy to bring it around while traveling. What I want to comment is actually the slow processing speed of Amazon. I've placed my order on 17 July and it's only shipped on 20 July. AND the estimated delivery date is 31 Aug!? 45 days for the entire process? I'm only in Singapore. Not outer space... Can things be sped up a little here? FYI, there's only one book in my order.Hope Amazon improves on this, else delivery time is the first thing to consider when placing order here by any Asian country customers.

The Book of Numbers

Amazon.com Review

The Book of Numbers lets readers of all levels of mathematical sophistication (or lack thereof) understand the origins, patterns, and interrelationships of different numbers. Whether it is a visualization of the Catalan numbers or an explanation of how the Fibonacci numbers occur in nature, there is something in here to delight everyone. The diagrams and pictures, many of which are in color, make this book particularly appealing and fun. A few of the discussions may be confusing to those who are not adept mathematicians; those who are may be irked that certain facts are mentioned without an accompanying proof. Nonetheless, The Book of Numbers will succeed in infecting any reader with an enthusiasm for numbers.

From Library Journal

The authors are well known to both academic and recreational mathematicians?Conway for inventing the "game of life" and discovering surreal numbers and Guy as the editor of the "Unsolved Problems" section in American Mathematical Monthly. They also coauthored the classic Winning Ways for Your Mathematical Plays (Academic, 1982). This popularization of number theory looks like another classic. Though number theory does not lend itself to fun and games, the authors take such joy in the order and patterns of numbers that you can't help being fascinated by what is actually a fairly difficult subject. A combination of clear verbal explanations, wonderfully clever diagrams, and equations (for the real mathematicians) make sometimes complicated numerical concepts accessible to those "without particular mathematical background" (i.e., who are not at least graduate students in mathematics). The material is simplified but not dumbed down. A bridge to understanding and appreciating higher mathematical concepts, this book could appeal to anyone from a mathematically sophisticated high school student to a university mathematics professor.?Amy Brunvand, Univ. of Utah Lib., Salt Lake CityCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The sections at the beginning of the book are a sheer delight. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on figurative numbers, which shows how to get sums of powers of numbers by arranging them in geometric patterns. The idea of arranging the sum of sequential numbers into a triangular shape goes back to ancient times, but I suspect that some of the other arrangements are due to Conway and Guy. There is a really nice treatment of sums of cubes. Did you know that the sum of the entries in a multiplication table from, say 1 to 9, is the sum of the cubes 1^3 + 2^3 + ... +9^3? I also enjoyed the section later on in the book on Catalan numbers. After the first two or three chapters, the book does seem rushed and there is much that I could not follow. I was especially frustrated by the method used to count the number of regions determined by the diagonals of a polynomial. It looks like a simple and original treatment of a classical problem, but after several attempts I just can't follow the logic.

We are in 1995, Conway is showing off numbers. Many of them. He warms us up pointing out that civilization has been using numbers everywhere and there are a bunch of composed words out there. And it took a great intellectual leap to see numbers as abstract entities. Then the numbers zoo broke loose. Many clever people started to create recipes for sequences of numbers. The fun here comes from the relations among numbers and geometric forms. Conway very often explains these relations using geometric isomorphisms making this book imaginary, transcendental, surreal, infinite, fun!

Conway and Guy start this book with an enticing survey of how numbers pervade the English language, showing the hidden (or not-so-hidden) numerical roots of common words. They also mention other numbering systems, including the Roman numerals, Greek, Egyptian, and cuneiform Babylonian - numbers that persist in our 60-based measures of minutes and seconds, in both time and angle.Next, they move into squares, triangular numbers, and many others with rich geometric meanings. Chapters 1 and 2, especially, create vivid images that bring many of their concepts to life. I had a bit of trouble finding ch.3's focus. It touches briefly combinatorics, a world in itself, and difference techniques. I found "Jackson's Fan" fascinating, but too terse for easy application to real problems. After this, the going gets a lot tougher, fast.By ch 4, "Famous Families," the illustration is no longer as vivid as before. Ch. 6, on fractions and decimal expansions also held some interest - it touches on complexity in the decimal forms of fractions, and the numeric roots from which it springs. The section on continued fractions is only just enough to titillate without really enlightening. Discussion of imaginary numbers is OK, and offers some enjoyable insights. The section on quaternions, though, does a lot less to invite personal involvement and stir the imagination. Later sections of the book present readable surveys of their topics, but require a lot more form the reader in the way of determination and mathematical background. If the whole book sustained the initial energy, it would have been an instant classic. The later parts of the book were clear, readable, and even enjoyable, but didn't match the breadth or vividness of the first half. I enjoyed this, but I may not come back to it.//wiredweird

This is one of my favorite MATH books, the ideas from which I use for children, teachers, and friends in addition to for personal entertainment. It is not just about numbers; it is about many aspects of real math. I so love it that I got two copies, one at home, the other at work. Prof. Conway is "a genius at work!" (book title about his love of math and life).

I own a lot of books on Mathematics and Mathematical topics. This book truly is my favorite. The color illustrations, the other drawings and diagrams make the topics very understandable and tantalizing. The section on infinite and infinitesimal numbers alone, has inspired me to submit a paper on this subject to a Mathematics Journal. This book will cause anyone who is not already a Mathphile, to quikly become one. Take a look at the middle numbers in Pascals Triangle....with a little manipulation of this sequence, you produce CATALAN NUMBERS, which further leads to a number of interesting problems with Friezes and Polygons, none of which are mind bending in their demand of your mental powers. The chapters are all short, and you can open the book at random and find something very nice to dine on. BUY THIS ONE! Dr.Pratt.

This is a delightful survey of numbers clearly aimed at as wide an audience as possible. However, as is always the case in such books the book is more formidable than it intends or than it looks. Still it is very friendly especially compared with, say, "Numbers" by Ebbinghays et al. The coverage is wide: primes, reals, Cayley numbers, Eisenstein numbers, polygonal numbers, catalan numbers, Stirling numbers of both types and of course Bell numbers. There are the cardinals and ordinals of Cantor as well as Conway's own surreal numbers. (And an earlier reviewer was correct about misprints and color problems.) I recommend this to anyone whose mathematical maturity is at least as great as basic calculus (and who is interested).

A mathematical tour-de-force. Buy it. read it. It will provoke radical thoughts about number theory.

Great fun, accessible to an intelligent person with even a modest familiarity with math. I got this one as a gift for an engineer friend. Interesting history, random odd information, and every chapter is an invitation to stretch your brain.
