4.6 stars, this book is about twins Tyler and Marvin Johnson are twin brothers living their daily life that is until his brother Tyler disappears from a party. Tyler quickly goes from a boy who disappeared one night. To another black boy who was murdered at the hands of police brutality. I knew as soon as I read the synopsis for this book that I had to read it and I don't regret one second of reading it. This book is so important for the black lives matter movement and so important for educating people on what it's like to to be black in America. This book was heart breaking. At times I had to put it down and collect myself because of how much it affected me. I couldn't take the raw emotion Marvin and his mother had. I couldn't take the lack of emotion from the police. I just couldn't take any of it.....but this is what's happening in America. Black men are being shot and it's my job as a black woman to educate herself on what that could be like for the families who have lost their children, father's, mothers, brothers. I just want to thank Jay Coles for putting this kind of story out there. It was brave, it was raw and it was everything I specifically needed to experience. This book has to be experienced. It's also always important to remember that when these young men lose their life they're more than a hashtag. They're just Tyler Johnson or Emmet Till or Mike Brown. They're just people.
A very culturally relevant novel about grief in the context of police brutality and racism. Coles has a lot to say about what it means to be black. He takes a very "stereotypical" situation -- the absent father, the desperation to survive the ghetto -- and writes it with some real heartHowever, I had a bit of a hard time connecting with this book, and I don't think it was the fault of the author, unless he was also in charge of writing the synopsis. The video mentioned in the synopsis does show up until, I think 2/3 through the book. I wish I hadn't known what happened to Tyler before I started reading the novel. It kept me from hoping and worrying with Marvin, the main character, because I already knew. I sympathized with him, sure, but my connection to him wasn't as deep as it might have been. Also, I thought the synopsis misrepresented Mrs. Johnson's grieving process.That being said, I still cried during the scene where Tyler's fate was confirmed. There were a few other scenes that left me in tears. And during a scene between Marvin and Faith. Especially in the last half, there are some very tender scenes that really got to me, both in sad ways and happy ways.The main cast was well-fleshed out, with those tender scenes showcasing Coles ability to write emotionally. The only character that felt inauthentic to me was Principal Dodson. There was something about him that was off for me. I'm not saying there aren't African Americans who have internalized and regurgitated racism, but his came off a little too strong, I think.You never find out which way the trial goes, which is a disappointment, but almost a mercy, because it leaves room for hope. Marvin's narration states that it doesn't matter, because he knows the truth of the situation and who Tyler was, which I think is both sad and inspiring. There's probably a reason I don't read very much contemporary fiction.I really appreciated and loved Marvin, not only because of who he is, but because of what his character represents (from a sociological angle). His identity is very much tied up in being the "good" black kid, the one who's going to get out of the ghetto, who's smart, who is "a credit to his race" (I don't remember if anyone actually says that in the novel, but that was the vibe I was getting from a lot of the characters). Because of that identity, he deals with these expectations, both from people thinking he's "soft" and basically white (like Johntae) and from those who think he's the perfect diversity candidate (like the recruiter for MIT). People expectations can shape your self-image, as a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy, and this novel shows that very well.Last comment is that Coles writes some very beautiful prose. I made several comments on my Kindle app at places where I thought he used just an amazing description, metaphor, or simile. Would recommend and would read another novel of his.
I am torn on this book, I like the idea and the writing is beautiful (very fluid and descriptive) but it just didn't hold my classes attention like some other novels we read this year. It seems like it takes a long time to get going and there are a lot of chapters that just meander.....it is like the story doesn't get started until close to the end. I like the relationship between the brothers and the realistic character descriptions. My students really liked Ivy and G-mo and the part they played in the story. Solid story, but a little too much exposition for my students
This beautifully written book explores racism and family extremely well. My original criticism was some of the police interaction scenes felt slightly over dramatized but after recent events I realized I was ignorant and those scenes are very real. I loved the writing style, specifically imagery. It's the best I've ever seen. Character development was great and well executed. Overall this book is great and needed.
This book is much different than the blurb would have you think. The title, though, is very apt. Marvin goes so quickly from dreaming about MIT and "A Different World" to grieving and finding his place in a world that pushes him down. Jay Coles's writing has a certain softness to it, even while the pain in the page is real and cruel. Looking forward to more from this author.CWs: police brutality, racism, sibling death

I rounded this up to a 4 because it definitely deserves it. This book like so many others is so so important especially in this messed up world we live inI enjoyed this book for sure and highly recommend it but I just didn't click with the writing style of it and it took me out of the story quite a bit. I did really love the friendship in this book how it got stronger and stayed true even when the main character was pushing them away. I wish we would've got to see more with his mom thoOverall this is definitely a book I think everyone should read and will always be recommending it
