Daniel C. Matt is a leading authority on Jewish mysticism. For twenty years, he served as Professor at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. oyful academia. I think that phrase best describes Daniel Matt's translation – with commentary – of the Zohar. PLUS no red string needed to reap the benefits of this incredible series.The author is much like a skilled chef: he not only understands what ingredients are in the product...in addition to where each ingredient has been grown...he also understands how they interplay with each other, how to mix them and how the final product will taste even before cooking it. Daniel Matt takes us into the garden that is the Zohar and acts as tour guide, storyteller and head chef.A word of caution however: this is a meal of esoteric thought. Some of the flavors you will be exposed to may seem a bit too scary taste or unfathomable. Like any feast of exotic food, you will need to commit yourself to the whole meal to gain perspective and appreciation for each course. The payoff will be a deliciously deep & rational understanding of the Zohar specifically and the Jewish mystical experience as whole.This is an important and valuable addition to anyone's library.

Volume 9, ends the sections edited by Daniel C. Matt, the 10th volume comes out later this month! This is the culmination of a lot of work to bring forth a readable and very well-documented and noted work. Covering the commentary from Numbers 13:1 to Deuteronomy 32, it is 928 pages filled with notes and explanations and references galore! a massive volume that I hope to sink my teeth into very soon. If you have not been collecting the volumes - you had better do so soon. This is a magnificent translation and work.

The 9th of the Series is as good as the rest but how many more to go? Mr. Matt certainly deserves heaps of praise for his herculean efforts. We English speakers are very grateful to have such an accurate and thoughtful translation of a work the content of which is important notwithstanding the lack of certainty of its authorship.

A wondrous multi-volume series of mystic insights into the Torah that Christians or any spiritually inclined person should also read and ponder on.

My husband loved these. He looks up references and it enhances his learning.

True scholarship by Prof. Daniel Matt and everyone involved. All these volumes are excellent and should be read and studied by all who seek knowledge of The Zohar and kabbalah.

This is an amazing series with each volume serving as a real illumination of the Zohar in terms of text and annotations.

Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard did an excellent job in telling this account of the times before Jesus, leading up to his birth to his tomb found empty after His crucifixion.They write in the tone like Flavious Josephus. He rights historical facts. It will cut right to your deepest emotions. It is very graphic in describing the cruelty of Tiberius, the Herods and others. Plus detailed graphic description of Christ's crucifixion. I couldn't put this book down.In the end they tell of how they've learned so much in researching this book having to separate fact from fiction, I believe they have given a most accurate account. I've already researched much of this myself, I like it all out together in this format!! I highly recommend this read!

This is a very difficult book to review, as you can imagine whenever you read and try to write a review concerning a book about a religious figure. I know that the authors say that this is not a religious book, but instead one that focuses on the humanity of Jesus Christ. They have done a good job treading the fine line between straight biography and religious writing.Of course, the main, and possibly only, source for the life of the Nazarene (as the authors term him) are the four gospels with which most readers are familiar. Interspersed with these writings you will find chapters devoted to Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Tiberius, and other historical characters. There is a brief, but concise, history of Rome, and short biographies of some of the figures, including Pontius Pilate and the several Herods. It appears that the authors accept the gospel account of the birth in Bethlehem and the visit of the Magi, which led to the slaughter of the infants in Bethlehem at the insistence of Herod. There appears to be no historical record for these events except for the gospels, so the reader either takes it at face value or not, depending on his or her beliefs. Also, the sticky question concerning Jesus' siblings is handled somewhat offhandedly, with a note concerning the various theories about who these people were, depending on your particular religion. I do take exception to the mention of Herod's "castle", a term I don't believe existed at that time, but it's a minor quibble.All things (particularly religious beliefs) considered, the author have done a well thought out job. There is no writing concerning the actual miracles attributed to Jesus, but they are mentioned in the text as news of them spread into the surrounding area, so the authors appear to make no claim to any authenticity. Also, the narrative ends with the crucifixion and burial, and then the discovery of the empty tomb three days later. After that, it's once again news of post death appearances spread by supposed eyewitnesses, with no attempt to state any author belief in whether or not these events actually occurred.Lest I be accused of being some type of sceptic or unbeliever, let me state that, like the authors, I am a practicing Roman Catholic and truly believe that Jesus is who he said he is and that, if I do what is right, he will greet me when I die. Just because I have some doubts about parts of the gospels doesn't mean that my faith is weak. 17 years of Catholic education has kept me strong and will, I trust, lead me to the reward Jesus promised.One last thing. I know that there are many people out there who do not like O'Reilly for his political views and will allow that mind set to lead them to give this book a bad review, even though many of them will not have read it. To those folks I say: read the book and if you don't believe that it's a good book, give it a bad review, but please don't let your political leanings cause you to downgrade the book because of your dislike of the author. There is no politics in this book, and so it shouldn't generate the venom that has accompanied the publication of his other historical works. Bill isn't a historian, but he and his co-author have done their best with a very touchy subject, and I salute their effort

I liked the way the book brought the characters into a more understandable character. I have read the Bible a few times over and I think I do understand it but Killing Jesus puts the story of his life and death into a more understandable perspective if you've ever been confused by the stories of the Bible. They tell personal stories of the people in the Killing Jesus book as well. Things you won't read in the Bible. In some cases, the descriptions of the people for whomthey describe are quite vivid. King Herod had all kinds of gross physical/medical problems. For me, it was well worth reading. I can fully recommend it. I bought the audio book which is actually read by Bill O'Reilly.

My 3rd O'Reilly book; however, it does not compare to "Killing Patton" or "Killing the Rising Sun".It is an in-depth study of life during Christ's time on earth. We read about the Gauls and the Romans, we learn things about Caesar, Tiberius, and Pontius Pilate that we never knew. The cruelty of the Romans and their manners of executions is horrifying. Chris't suffering is described in detail.O'Reilly does a fantastic job of helping the reader to feel the emotions of the characters, from the Roman government officials to Jesus's disciples.He also discusses the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. However, I feel he fails when it comes to Christ's resurrection and ascension. It is sort of left up to the reader to reach their own conclusion.On the whole the book is enlightening.

Most of us know the telling of Jesus as a religious story, but the other half is a story filled with political intrigue. In this book, the political side takes primary notice. The personal issues are brought out, and the minutia of living in those times, as well as the details of the crucifixion, but the main issue exposed by this book are the political manipulations. Without them, Jesus may never have gone to the cross. Some parts are raw, but reflect honestly the brutality of the day. Sensitive minds beware.

Cool book to read.Amazing pictures.Enticing food preparation descriptions.Makes me hungry.Stays on my coffee table.Friends and family enjoy flipping through pages.And I saw him play at Newport Jazz festival in 2017.Girlfriend bonked my head-should have bought book for him to sign.Oh well...love the book,food,and The Roots....and girlfriend,too.

Originally got it from the library and now bought my own copy. It has to be some of the most interesting and insightful conversations ever into the very subjective world of creativity. I have to be surprised that Nathan Myrvhold was included but the shifts in perspectives and backgrounds is very illuminating.

Questlove does it again ... This book made me want to travel the country and find these chefs! I finished it in a couple of sittings and it left me ... hungry but I learned more than I expected.

If you love food, chefs, restaurant culture, wickedly creative minds, music, the Roots, American cuisine, travel...in any combination, read this book.

About the Author

Growing up overseas, McNamara was exposed to a variety of spiritual traditions. Early incidents of illness and surgery brought on a persistent fear and contemplation of death and of what happens afterward. In his twenties, McNamara became a Buddhist practitioner, using meditation to investigate the nature of consciousness and reality. Because many traditions eventually become rigid and limiting out of a need for self-preservation, and do so at the cost of each individual's unique development, McNamara took a different path. He found lucid dreaming and the out-of-body experience to be especially potent methods for his spiritual inquiry, and free of the dogmatic qualities found elsewhere. He eventually applied his knowledge of meditation to telekinesis to illustrate the themes of interconnectedness and intention to his meditation students. He currently teaches meditation, lucid dreaming, the out-of-body experience, and telekinesis in Denver, Colorado, with the purpose of showing others that spiritual growth is still possible as an independent, self-empowering, and revelatory path. He is married to Cierra McNamara, who founded Mayu Sanctuary, a secular meditation center in Denver.

There are not many good books on Telekinesis and this book is one of the best. The techniques are clearly presented for the average person to learn and practice. The author presents Telekinesis as a natural ability that can be learned to show the connection between mind/body and our environment. It is also a form of subtle meditation that can improve one's concentration and inner connection to our natural vital force or chi.

I already do telekinesis, but I can say based on my own experience the techniques in here are rock solid. AND there's a couple ideas for seasoned veterans to play with. Very exciting techniques (for those of us who actually do this stuff). Thumbs up!!!

Did not like this at all...a complete waste of my time! It's just a step-by-step manual on how to perform a very small/minor type of "telekinesis". Nothing more. Already knew all of this...I was expecting much more than this VERY BASIC BOOK.

This book is the second part of Rob Simm’s three volume series about the U.S. national parks. This one covers camping and hiking in national parks in the Mountain West area. I appreciate that he lists essential information to know while visiting the parks but also describes ideas for day trips and two week trips. It makes for easy planning for fun trips! I have both his first and second book; I look forward to the third volume!

With the New Year, one of my resolutions was to hike more often or to plan for specific trips to beautiful parks and just spend the day there. To accomplish this, I made it a point to look for a travel guide that wasn't too thick, but instead focused on quick summaries of several parks in the country. A friend recommended me this book, so I thought, why not? I'm pretty glad I chose it, come to think about it. It is very cheap, and surprisingly thorough despite its price. See, if you get a travel guide that is cheaper and shorter, it allows you to have a fast-forward view of all the options you have available, and which one you can pick based on what you personally want. After that you can buy a thicker guide based on that choice you made without going through so much hassle. I like this book, and highly recommend it to others.

I got this book because we are going a motorcycle trip through these different National Parks. Getting this book gave us a lot of good ideas for putting together our itinerary for our trip. Going through these Parks are a good way to understand that part of the United States.
