About the Author

David J. Griffiths received his B.A. (1964) and Ph.D. (1970) from Harvard University. He taught at Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Trinity College before joining the faculty at Reed College in 1978. In 2001-02 he was visiting Professor of Physics at the Five Colleges (University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Hampshire), and in the spring of 2007 he taught Electrodynamics at Stanford. He retired in 2009. Griffiths is a Consulting Editor of The American Journal of Physics, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In 1997 he was awarded the Millikan Medal by the American Association of Physics Teachers. He has spent sabbaticals at SLAC, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and University of California, Berkeley. Although his Ph.D. was in elementary particle theory, his recent research is in electrodynamics and quantum mechanics. He is the author of over fifty articles and four books: Introduction to Electrodynamics (4th edition, Cambridge, 2013), Introduction to Elementary Particles (2nd edition, 2008), Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (2nd edition, Cambridge, 2016), and Revolutions in Twentieth-Century Physics (Cambridge, 2012).

The author is great, he's clear and witty. However the problems aren't all really doable with what they tell you, that is, they don't give you enough explanation in the text to be able to solve problems. My classmates and I keep finding ourselves with no idea how to proceed on problems it gives, even if we've read over the text for that chapter several times.

Used this for sophomore physics at Caltech. This book is mostly how I learned quantum mechanics, and it was really helpful, although many of the main results are for YOU to prove.

This textbook is terrible for getting learning directly out of it. The explanations are overly compact and assume a vast mathematical expertise; by reading forums and blogs, it assumes much more than the average student taking an intro to quantum class will have. Across the book there are no analogies, no creative examples and no useful diagrams. The book has very little imagination put into it and it is to be used as more of a reference once you actually know the material than a book for doing learning. Comparing the examples, explanations and diagrams found on this book with those of another book reveals just how little imagination and didactive skill this Griffiths guy has. (An example would be) However funny the picture of the cat climbing a ladder is, it is of absolutely no help whatsoever when trying to understand what ladder operators actually do to systems. Without a good professor, this textbook will have you looking online for explanations and supporting material nearly all the time. There are very few examples, and the overall organization of the materials is weird. Other textbooks will hit at or straight ahead explain some of the math of things rather than leaving it for later chapters; I'm referring specifically to the concepts of eigenstates, eigenfunctions and vectors.

Excellent undergraduate quantum mechanics book. The only thing I regret about is that in the new edition some interesting topics like Berry phase and quantum statistical mechanics are removed.

Griffiths is second only to Jim Baggott in explaining QM without dropping the essential math. But Griffiths goes a lot deeper. I already have the Second Edition but couldn’t resist this update; at an age where re-reading books doesn’t seem like a great idea anymore this is one I’m looking forward to curling up with.Griffiths’ rigorous treatments are clear and compelling but you don’t need a doctorate to read and enjoy.

The equations do not scale with font size. They are too small to read on the Kindle Oasis and Kindle Fire 8 HD.

The negative reviews are surprising to me. Griffiths's quantum mechanics is a spectacularly straightforward approach to a complicated subject matter, with troves of information. Problems are laid out to often give you *precisely* what you need to solve a problem (for example, there was even a reminder on how to complete the square to simplify the integral on one problem). Seems possibly mean to say, but if the math is too hard, you need more math. This is quantum mechanics, not introductory Newtonian mechanics.

Franklin's Valentines is one of those classic adventures by Paulette Bourgeois.Franklin spent a lot of time creating his valentines for his friends. But in his rush and excitement to get to school for the party that day, his valentines fell out of his backpack. When he calls home to see if they are there, Mother tells him they fell into a slush puddle and were ruined. Franklin runs out of the classroom and hides in the cloakroom, convinced that he doesn't belong at the party. Mr. Owl reassures him that it will be okay.Franklin returns to class and feels bad as his pile of valentines grows, but he has none to give in return. Bear tells him that he doesn't need a valentine to know Franklin is his friend. That eening, Franklin talks to his parents about making extra special cards for next year, but can't wait that long. The following morning, Franklin is busy cutting out new cards for his friends. When he delivers them to his friends, he tells them that they are in honor of Friendship Day, which can be any day you want.The most important lesson in this book is that real friends don't need material things from you to know that you are a friend. In today's society, it feels like there is more and more emphasis on giving gifts and treats for little to no reason whatsoever. Commercial valentines being passed out on February 14th are a perfect example of his. Something that is hand-crafted by a friend has that extra ingredient of love that cannot be emulated in a mass-produced card.The other aspect that I liked about this book is how Franklin comes to realize that you don't need to wait for a specific holiday to let your friends know you care about them. Friendship Day can happen at any time of year. It is more special when you decide you want to honor your friend.Reading this book reminds me of my young students. On their own, they will create little cards, drawings and books for their friends, just because. The children are more impressed by these handmade gifts than they are by anything purchased in a store. When I read them this book, they seemed to relate to that aspect of the story, even at their young age (preschool through kindergarten).I received a complimentary set of galleys from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for this review.

Novice and skilled performers often find many of the songs on required lists for solo and ensemble competitions, recitals, and performances alike.Harry Thacker Burleigh was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1866. His mother was a slave, Hamilton Waters, who was discarded by his Maryland owners when he became blind. His grandfather used to sing spirituals to Harry as Harry led him through the streets of Erie.After graduation from high school, Harry became well established as a singer in the Episcopal Church in Erie. He learned of the availability of a scholarship at the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. With the help of donations from many public spirited Erie music lovers, he was able to go to New York to study.In addition to his regular studies, Harry studied voice with Christian Fritsch, harmony with Rubin Goldmark and counterpoint with John White and Max Spicker. He played double bass and tympani in the conservatory orchestra under Franz Van der Stucken, Gustav Hinricks and Anton Dvorak.Burleigh played and sang the old melodies for Dvorak, such as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", which is mirrored in the second theme of the first movement of Dvorak's New World Symphony.Harry Burleigh became a linguist, singing in Hebrew as we all as Latin, Italian, French and German. For several years, he regarded his casual efforts at composition as merely mental exercise, until his friends virtually forced him to publish. "DEEP RIVER", published in 1917, made Harry Burleigh well known as a composer. His "Little Mother of Mine" was performed throughout the world by famous operatic tenor John McCormack.He was a charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. His music falls into three main categories: secular, religious and spirituals. This volume has the largest body of his work published in one source with 48 songs total.If you are a student of vocal music, a student of the blues, or a vocalist who wishes to expand your repertoire in a fundamental American art song form, I highly recommend this volume.

Good arrangements with a lot of songs. I was looking for "Balm in Gilead" in particular. I had heard Paul Robeson sing it originally and was looking for that piano/vocal arrangement of the song. The arrangement in this book is almost spot on. There are many other good songs and arrangements in a good range for low voice.

This book of Spirituals by Harry Burleigh is wonderful par none!!If you are a classical singer this work of spirituals should be a part of your library. The music is incredible and you will not be sorry for owning it.

I ordered this to get the classic simple arrangements of spirituals for solo voice. I was not disappointed. And I was pleasantly surprised to see arrangements of spirituals I was completely unfamiliar with for a wide range of seasons and purposes. This is a foundation collection of arrangements for the library of any singer.

But she loved it and really enjoyed the arrangements. I had already bought a copy for my spouse, and I like listening to him play.

Indecisive, I bought two books on drop-shipping thinking that multiple resources are better than one and I'm glad I did. The first book I read was, not this one, but one called The Ultimate Dropshipping guide and found it to be very informative. It's written by two authors who have actually had success running dropshipping businesses, whereas with this book.. I cannot find much information about Mr. Greg Addison but it is very much written as though he just researched the subject too himself and then wrote a book on it rather than writing from actual personal experience, but hey.. I could be wrong. The book he wrote just came off very, "this will work for YOU" rather than "this is what worked for ME or US". It had a lot of the same basic information the first book I read did, except it wasn't as well written and the first book I read went a bit further into depth which I appreciated. Had I been able to psychically flip through both books before making my purchase, I never would've bought this one.

This book written easy to understand. I think dropshipping can be a very profitable business. I mean considering that there is no inventory handling on your part can save a lot of expense. After reading this book I have realized how helpful this book was. Inside of this book the author “Greg Addison” has described everything comprehensively. Tolstoy is relatively new to me having become interested following the movie The Last Station... about the end of Tolstoy's life. I chose this book and Tolstoy's biography to begin with. I am so very pleased with this compilation and with Tolstoy's writing. It is well put together and provides a clear understanding to Tolstoy's spiritual quest. Excellent book!

This book was an excellent summary of Tolstoy's thinking, the editor has taken parts from several of Tolstoy's writings and hashed them together in a logical pattern. It stays rather light compared to the experience of reading a single Tolstoy doctrine such as "The Kingdom of God is Within You". Excellent introduction. I'm giving this to a friend now to get her familiar.

I thought Tolstoy's writings would be much more interesting, but this book proved to be dry and uninteresting. I'd recommend this book for those who are new to the subject.

I discovered Tolstoy when I was twelve years old, and I've been reading and rereading him ever since (over forty years now; where did all that time go!?) My guess is that Tolstoy is one of the major influences in my life. I only began to appreciate how deeply he'd influenced me when I discovered Gandhi in my twenties, and realized that I agreed with most of what the Mahatma said because I'd already been convinced by Tolstoy.But I've always been puzzled by Tolstoy's religious beliefs, never feeling that I had a good grasp of them but sensing that until I did, I could never really appreciate Tolstoy's message. Charles Moore's excellent compilation has helped me begin to make sense of what Tolstoy believed. Reading his anthology, I'm persuaded that sometimes Tolstoy's reflections on religion simply don't make sense (his "Thoughts on God" strike me as simply confused), sometimes they suggest a liberal moralism dressed up as religion, and sometimes they're preachy and judgmental. But at his best, Tolstoy's vision of God as love, prayer as the method by which we get in touch with divine love, and the exercise of love as the heart of Jesus' message, is superb. It's what inspired Gandhi in his nonviolence, and it's what makes Tolstoy still worth reading. (One crucial question, however, is how to sustain loyalty to Jesus' moral message while denying, as Tolstoy did, Jesus' divinity.)Moore's anthology also focuses (in its first section) on Tolstoy's lifelong search for meaning and truth (Tolstoy's dying words were an affirmation of his love for truth). Tolstoy was one of those persons with a deep and abiding hunger for deep meaning in life, and this longing motivated much in his life and writings, sometimes driving him to excess. In our day and age, existential hunger seems quaint. Perhaps we fear to acknowledge our own hunger because we sense, howsoever vaguely, that doing so will bring us pain. But if Tolstoy's correct, we only really learn to love when we embrace the hunger.All in all, much good nourishment in this collection, prefaced by a very worthy introduction written by editor Moore. Highly recommended.
