Geneen Roth is a writer and a teacher who has gained international prominence through her work in the field of eating disorders. She is the founder of the Breaking Free workshops, which she has conducted nationwide since 1979. She is also the author of Feeding the Hungry Heart, Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating, and When Food is Love. A frequent guest on television and radio programs, she has written for and been featured in Tie, Ms., New Woman, Family Circle, and Cosmopolitan. Her poetry and short stories have been published in numerous anthologies. Born in New York City, she now lives in northern California.

GET THIS BOOK! I've bought 3 additional books by Geneen and they are all great. (Women, Food, and God). This author is a badass and addresses all topics and thoughts that go on while going through or having eating disorders. It is so relatable and relieving. She is straight forward and easy to understand. I bought so many books from Amazon over the years, but this is the first book I received that I could not put down and finished within a week. She provides great tools and experience. I've been practicing them slowly. I can't say that this will solve your eating issues overnight, because let's be real, there's no magic pill in life and it takes time to implement new habits. I can promise you that this book is the real deal and I enjoy Geneen's honest writing. It's a great supplement in addition to therapy.
I read Paul McKenna's "I Can Make You Thin" (horrible title, but great advice). I really liked his four golden rules: Eat only when you are hungry, eat only what you want to eat, eat consciously and enjoy, and stop when you are full. Seems obvious, but hard to practice. I wanted to practice this instead of dieting. It makes sense and it feels right. But his book was missing something. WHY couldn't I do it?Breaking Free has the same ideas as his book. But there are no rules in hers; it's about acceptance. And she fills in the gaps that his book left. His is a small, digestible, analytical book, and hers goes into more depth. What is our goal? We think it's to be thin, but why? Because we want to be satisfied, happy. But that doesn't have to equate to being thin.Her book helps you cut yourself some slack. I still want to lose weight, but I don't need to stop living my life and berate myself because I'm not doing it perfectly and I'm not there yet.She touches on connecting with your body and trusting it. And if you do decide to eat when you are NOT hungry, why? Are you trying to avoid thinking about what's bothering you? Are you bored? If you know that eating when you are not hungry will not nourish your body, what are you hoping to accomplish?She points out that all of this is okay, but these are decisions that we need to make consciously. When she first started trying to come to a balance between her emotions and her body, she put on a lot more weight. And that's frightening. But in the long run, it was worth it to be able to eat only when she was hungry, or to not beat herself up when she ate anyway because she recognized that food was performing another function that she wanted.Her observations really hit home with me. It was a relief to hear someone put my thoughts and feelings into words that I could directly relate to.
I've been through all the disorders many reading this book have: anorexia, then into compulsive exercising, then years later bulimia and binge eating, which I maintained until 2 months ago...when I read this book. This book landed in my hands at the time in my life when I was receptive to it. I was at such a low, desperate point that I was willing to consider ANYTHING. Much like the author herself. I read reviews on this book and figured it was worth a shot.It was amazing. It's a book for those deep in the throes of compulsive eating, binging, bulimia, etc. It's for those of us that feel like we can never, ever be "normal" around food. For those of us whose lives are run by food, when it consumes our thoughts, actions and behaviors. When food has become a force that controls your life and your happiness--when you can't IMAGINE ever being able to be comfortable with eating like "everyone else"--this book might be the one little gift that touches your heart and guides you into the transformation you are desperate for.Roth goes into the fundamentals of learning how to identify hunger on a very basic level again. How to identify it, then how to identify what will satisfy it. Then, she helps you to identify what's going on when you want to eat but aren't physically hungry. I have been incorporating her mindsets for 8 weeks now. I've lost 10 pounds as I'm naturally getting back to my body's normal weight...while finally, finally becoming more comfortable being around food. It does not run my life anymore. I'm definitely not 100% "healed" from my disordered thoughts, but they are losing their grip on me more and more every day. Sending love to anyone else out there who might be in this space and need something to come into their lives to transform their own hell.

I got down to the last two chapters and hated this book so much that I stopped and threw it in the trash. I just couldn't relate to the author at all and didn't feel the book actually taught you how to break free from emotional eating. Yes it tells you to acknowledge it and to be kind to yourself but ultimately it says to see a therapist lol
I love Geneen Roth's writings and this book was a real eye opener for me regarding the "why's" of emotional eating. As a follower of her readings, I found this book and several other of her books to be very helpful on my journey to understanding why I over-eat and how to get it under control. It not only helps with eating disorders, it also helped me with other aspects of my life. Very reader friendly.
Still working through this one. Again an easy read for me and the author gives good information to to assist the reader in determining what emotional eating is and how to help you through the rough spots of emotional eating.
Geneen Roth understands the reasons women have trouble with their eating more than anyone, and she articulates them in her books beautifully. Reading this book is a must if you are serious about understanding your weight and eating, and ready to challenge your old ways of dealing with it. Personally I made great strides with my own issues, starting with this book.
