Nevada is the last great desert frontier in the contiguous United States. North of Las Vegas, where the skies are blue and clear above the sage-covered desert, the Great BasinÕs range country is defined by alpine environments where aspens and pines shade the traces of last winterÕs snow on their northern slopes. In contrast, NevadaÕs basins are decorated by colorful mesas, the autumn leaves of cottonwoods, and herds of wild horses that inspired great artists like Maynard Dixon, who traveled from San Francisco across California to Nevada in the 1920s to paint them. Anyone who views Nevada as a vast desolate wasteland is very wrongÑit is simply an incredibly beautiful place. We thank our readers who sent us their field notes regarding inaccessibility to areas due to new construction and private property closures, damage to areas from vandalism, littering, and "rogue" off-road vehicle use. Several trips in the first edition have been removed because they no longer exist, replaced by new streets and neighborhoods. Alas, though much of what is described still exists, the book is nearly thirty years out of date and requires revision. Hey, I can do that! Why?
