This is one of my favorite books of all time. Kohanov truly vibes with horses and is articulate and brilliant enough to narrate the life-changing journey she has taken with them. Her story begins with an injury that leads to developing an on-the-ground relationship with her mare, Rasa. It's so simple as to be obvious, but too many horse owners/riders barely interact with their horses out of the saddle, despite this being where the relationship is built and the bonding occurs. Kohanov spends days, months, years just being with her horses, "doing nothing." The zen "nothing" that is everything. I have learned so much about being attuned to horse nuances, about being receptive and non-aggressive, from reading her book. Kohanov's philosophy is one of establishing rapport, not beating into submission, and it is the ONLY one any worker with horses should adopt..I've read this twice now and know I will read it again. She has a highly developed understanding of equines and uses that understanding to heal horses as well as humans. Her approach is practical and inspiring. If you love horses, buy this book and read it more than once.
Very interesting read about a woman's journey with horses that continued to evolve into unconventional methods to re-train problem horses and eventually equine therapy/mental health. What is so interesting is that the field of equine therapy was relatively new at the time she started. Through observation and experience she became a pioneer in the field. Acknowledging intuitive communication with horses has opened the door for equestrians to admit they have had these same type of experiences too. Since this book was originally published the mental health community has mostly embraced or at least become intrigued with using equine facilitated therapy with clients. We are always learning in everything we do but it takes a keen observer to document in a methodical way so experiences/concepts can be repeated and Kohanov has accomplished that. This book is groundbreaking in the field of EFT, and equestrian training emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and the intelligence of horses as teachers. In the round pen a horse will respond to our energy in a way that reflects our strengths and weaknesses. As someone with very little horse experience I found this book intriguing, sparking a desire to learn more about therapy with horses as partners and more about horses in general.
At first I was like "wow horses are pretty I like horses and run on sentences"Now I'm like "Wow, life is so much more complex and brilliant than I thought. Horses could help enlighten me and I'm suddenly beginning to use punctuation."Read this book if you want to be like me. Don't read this book if you hate horses and learning.
I renewed my childhood passion for horses two years ago when found a wonderful stables and trainer through a groupon. My teacher is naturally intuitive and very much a horse whisperer. Although we don't talk in some of the more metaphysical language of the book, we do talk about connecting with and understanding energetics with your horse. I was hoping for a deeper perspective on the horse-human relationship to help deepen my experiences and understanding of horses and I can barely put this book down!
I read this book based on the strong recommendation made by an equine veterinarian friend when I told her that my daughter was involved in equine therapy. Kohanov is a great writer and clearly has a special relationship with horses, but I found the sections that examined her ability to communicate with her "horse ancestors" to be tough going.
If horses could write, what a tale they would tell. Would we want to hear it? If all the horses throughout time massed together, to reach out and draft an author, Linda Kohanov would be their choice, and The Tao of Equus would be their book.By the second page of the Introduction I was in tears. Only two other books have ever had that effect on me: Les Miserables, and A Tale of Two Cities, and I had to get to the end to have the same reaction. The introduction describes a high-performing dressage horse who cannot find a rider worthy of him, until an animal therapist writes him an ad that draws his perfect rider to him. These kinds of unions have always gotten to me, and I never really understood why. Reading this book has helped. If you can believe the author, that horses have souls and emotions, it's easier to understand. This is not an easy read. Much of it seems like research designed to mount a defense of a new academic discipline, to lend weight to what might be perceived as a frivolous pursuit. The therapy involved is far from frivolous, and I wonder if the author could have made her case with a few less words, and not quite so many reviews and references. It's worth slogging through, however, to get to the jewels, the rapturous descriptions of all things equine. The wonderful case studies. The joy the author has in life. Reading this book makes you glad there are such people in this world, and such horses, and that they have taken the time to write. Well done, horse ancestors!
Wasn't sure about this book as the title suggested it was geared for women. However, the concepts are just as relevant for men and it is a powerful book for anyone.
This is a very inspiring book it's hard to put it down I lost a lot of sleep when this book came in my house I'm not regretting it though
