Doug Drexler is an Academy Award® winning Makeup Artist who has collaborated with such talents as Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Jimmy Caan, Meryl Streep, and Warren Beatty. His career in the entertainment industry began working for makeup legend Dick Smith on such films as The Hunger and Starman. He also contributed to Three Men and a Little Lady, The Cotton Club, FX and Dick Tracy to name but a few. Tracy led to an Oscar® as well as the British Academy Award and the Saturn Award. Two Emmy Award® nominations would follow for three years of work on Star Trek: The Next Generation.® When Star Trek: Deep Space Nine® went into production, Mike Okuda (Scenic Arts Supervisor) took a chance on the makeup guy from Brooklyn who wanted to be a designer. I never picked up a copy of this wonderous guide when it was published. There were a few mistakes I made last decade, not buying this book was one of them.There is not much storyline given away here. Mostly background info regarding the Cardassians, Bajorans and the Federation. Deep Space Nine was the best "Star Trek" series, in my humble opinion. This guide is useful to those who wish to write about the series of the future, as well as daydreamers like myself. The thrill of walking down every corridor, knowing the details of Quark's bar and Ops...It is all like dream, now that it is over. I never watched the original broadcast in the 1990s. What a loss on my behalf. Now in the age of hopelessly dull reality T.V., what a better way to pass the time than watching the epic unfold on DVD. Though a little overpriced, to an avid fan like myself, worth every penny! Make sure you have a copy of this manual sitting close by!

This was basically bought after I was doing research for a Runabout model kit. I had never seen it in the bookstores when it was originally released.What a step up from the Star Trek TNG Technical manual. Lots of colour illustrations and just as much detail. There was most of the infomation I needed for the Runabout as well as an extensive section on the Defiant. Of course there are lots of detail on the station as well.Be warned a lot of the content is Trek technobable, but it's still fun to browse on a rainy day.Well worth getting getting for a Trek buff or modeller. What a pity we'll probably never see a similiar book for either Voyager or Enterprise.
The Star Trek DS9 Tech Manual is a fascinating read for any Star Trek fan, or fan of the show. DS9 was a whole new direction and this book really brings it to life, with some very cool bonuses about the USS Defiant and other Starfleet vehicles featured on the show during all 7 seasons.
This is a must own for anyone who has ever needed to know why something works the way it does in Star Trek. This covers almost everything you can imagine in how Deep Space Nine and space craft work. If it isn't covered in this book it is covered in the TNG Tech Manual. If you write Fan Fiction, play a character in a Trek RPG, or operate a Trek Website You will treat the Tech Manuals as your gospal in Trek technology. Other good books are out there, but they don't compete with this book.The tech isn't much different in manner from the TNG Tech Manual, but the images in this, the DS9, manual are far superior. All Trek Geeks (come on, fess up) need this book.
I just thought I'd put out there that this book does contain a few plot spoilers for DS9. I got it so I could more fully geek-out as I go through the series on Netflix, expecting it to pretty much stick with technical matters (which it does, overall), but I immediately read a huge plot development that I wish I didn't know.Otherwise it's a good companion to the show. The extensive details and explanations do add to the sense of it being a real place. You have to be into reading tedious, quasi-scientific details of something that isn't even real, of course.I was a little disappointed with the pictures. They're rendered in a tepid cg and don't have enough linearity or contrast to be very 'readable', like you would want from technical drawings. The images inside the book are not as clear as those on the cover. There also aren't nearly as many as I would like, compared to all the long, wordy descriptions. Having said all that, I would still recommend the book to any fans of DS9.
This book was brand new. But the content was impossible to get through. I have alll of the manuals and this is the only one i couldnt finish
Awesome manual of my fav ST series.
