Though I might not always agree with everything she says, I know whatever she says comes from a heart that is devoted to God and is seeking him. As this year I am spending a lot of time reading about Biblical Womanhood, this was high on my list.One of the things I loved about this book is that it was from a mother’s heart to her daughter. So much of the advice felt not like so many of the books on the market, but like I was sitting at her beach home listening to her talk. I felt as if I was peering over Elisabeth’s shoulder reading these letters, unfiltered, no nonsense, but with deep beauty.The advice was so steeped in Scripture without any of the softening that so many books try to do. I loved the way she made fun of feminism and did not shy away from saying things that are politically incorrect with no apology. So many books on womanhood for Christian women (I am finding) almost sound as if they are apologizing for the politically incorrect way God wants women to live. Elisabeth Elliot does not apologize; she shows what a wonderful thing is.This book really got me to thinking in such a good way. I saw so many areas that I need to allow God to work on me. There is nothing as empowering as seeing a reflection of what you are supposed to be, and I found it in this book.Elliott does talk about sex in this book. After all, it is a part of life, womanhood, and her daughter was about to be married. I found this chapter one of the more encouraging ones, oddly enough. I think because she talks about it very matter-of-factly but also doesn’t become crude about it. All her advice and encouragement is steeped in biblical principles and personal experience. I didn’t find it awkward, but rather much like a good mother-daughter talk.I highly recommend this book to women who are trying to live their life aligned with God and the Bible, not the world.
This. Book. Is. Amazing. I have purchased one for my grandmother, with 4 more (so far) going to the women in my life I love. I will be using this as a supplemental resource to the Bible when discipling women from this point forward, as well. In today's world, being a feminine woman has almost become an offense to WOMEN, and Elisabeth Elliot does an absolutely superb job of calling us UP to the purpose our very Creator intended for us to live in. I love her emphasis of the freedom we have in being women of God, yes, submitting and sacrificing in specific and unique ways. I say this as someone who struggles with male authority! I would love to write at length my love for Elisabeth Elliot and this book, but I'm going to dive into it again :) This book is wonderful for single and married women of any age. Sososososososo good!
Great advice from a godly woman. This should be required reading for every young lady before she decides to marry. Our society has done an injustice in allowing girls to think that their happiness relies in the man they marry...expecting that husband to "make" us happy. We have to learn to find our happiness in the Lord and ourselves in order to have a healthy marriage.
i love this book. it has short little "chapters" that are easy to read, but so full of wisdom and causes me to think about what I'm doing and what I need to work on. It's like a devotional in that sense, but much deeper than a lot of devotionals for women out there.
This book is for women of any stage of life. It is a hard, clear, descriptive, passionate call for us to live as biblical women, in a way only Elisabeth Elliot can write it. One of the sweet aspects of it is that it is a collection of personal letters to her daughter, in preparation for her upcoming marriage. You have the wisdom of a woman who has lived many years both married and single, raising a daughter, working, serving in ministry- she knows the various paths life can take. And her firm foundation in scripture is to be trusted.
This book exceeded my expectations. It was extremely easy to read. It is very intimate, a mother writing to her daughter. I felt close to the author. She is teaching her daughter how to be a woman and wife by examining the Bible and her life.
Written for her daughter, but beautiful and practical for all women. The way she writes makes you feel as if you might be having this chat over tea. I adore this book and it will be a required read for both of my girls when I feel they are mature enough.
This is a wonderful book that provides insight to what a woman of God is in every stage of her life from youth, singlehood, married life, to widowhood and beyond. Sometimes we need content other than books on dealing with single life, etc. Elisabeth Elliott's writings challenged my own thinking and encourages me to grow stronger in my faith walk as God leads me into the various seasons of my life. I even bought the book as gifts for several of my engaged friends.
