Take care--this is not quite what it appears to be. For one thing, respected archeologist David Stuart is NOT the author--he contributes a brief foreword. More importantly, NONE of the many author contributors are identified as to their institutional or academic affiliations, nor do we have any sense of their background to speak authoritatively about aspects of the Maya. There is no "about the contributors" listing--or at least I could not find it. Such a section is standard form in any serious book on almost any subject (or, alternatively, authors are identified at the beginning or end of their contribution--that's not true here, either). And that's a tragedy as this is a handsome product with glorious photography and some excellent maps. It appears to have been a volume first published in either Mexico or Spain (the very short bibliography is heavy on Spanish-language citations), and then translated for the larger English-speaking market.Summing up, this appears to be an authoritative anthology of chapters written for a general audience and well-illustrated with photos (though surprisingly few diagrams). But the book offers no information on its many authors--a crippling limitation (at least to me--I returned my copy) when dealing with such a complex, fascinating, and fast-changing field.
This is a beautiful book full of history and pictures. I got this for a friend whose heritage is Mayan, and who had talked about wanting to know more about the culture of his ancestors. He loved this gift, and intends to read it front to back. Other people have mentioned seeing him carry it around or sitting with it, so I know it was a good choice.
This book contains a wonderful collection of articles along with spectacular photos.
Beautifully illustrated book with interestng commentary. Welcome addition to my library of books on Pre Comubian art and history.
A well done book, worth the money in my opinion. It is not for traveling, it weighs in under ten pounds but a dandy book for a personal library. If you have plans to visit Mayaland, this book will give you an excellent grounding for when you visit the different ruins.
