Steph Young has written so many books on people going missing under strange circumstances. The number of case files she has presented is staggering. She also allows for various theories by different people to come to light without pushing any specific agenda. In this book several new cases and theories are presented and somehow I feel we're maybe starting to zone in a tiny bit more now on the reality that really lies behind these sinister happenings.Like all of Steph's books, it's a very interesting read that you won't be able to put down until it's finished,
I have perused the works of Ms. Young across multiple platforms; in books, on websites, in podcasts, on radio. As a researcher of all that is weird and inexplicable, she has never failed to deliver the most mind-boggling cases of strange and mysterious happenings, most of which involve disappearances of people. Sometimes her research is scholarly or journalistic, invoking images of her on late nights poring over dusty tomes and microfiche, seeking out old reports and obscure published papers. Other times it is more like a beat reporter, all accounts given directly from the mouths of those involved in whatever she is investigating at the time. This book is largely of the latter variety, containing many accounts given directly to her by people who reached out to her after hearing her speak or reading one of her books. It is riveting and exclusive, most of the accounts being totally new to me(and I have delved deeply into this subject over the years). My only complaint is that I wish it were longer, and that's not really a complaint, is it? Highly recommended for anyone interested in mysterious vanishings, or if you just want a few freaky tales to spin 'round a campfire.
Steph Young, an investigative and independent researcher, has compiled a number of unexplained and mysterious happenings in the woods. By its title “Horror in the Woodsâ€, a reader would expect to be mesmerized by accounts of strange occurrences in the woods. As is the case, that’s precisely what Steph Young brings to the table in this book. Real-life accounts woven with skeptic and professional viewpoints about what could have happened in each case. The stories themselves were spooky, there’s no doubt. But as an avid reader, I found a few things that left me not wanting to peruse any more of Young’s works.First and foremost, the text in this book was all in bold (perhaps it was just my computer). Bold text is supposed to make important points or headers stand out, not the entire text. I don’t know if it was a formatting issue during publication, but it made this book hard to read. Additionally, a few subheaders would not have gone amiss. This would have broken up the text so it didn’t flow in between narrative perspectives, accounts, and counterpoints.Overall, I really wanted to enjoy this book more than I did. The stories were interesting and the overarching discussion was balanced. But little attention to formatting made me struggle with reading and impacted my overall experience.
I was expecting to be reading a structured story with a typical introduction, researched content, and an original conclusion. This book is nothing of the sort. It briefly explains the content and then jumps right into accounts of scary experiences as recalled or reported by the participants. The individual stories about each incident seem to jump from topic to topic. I would have liked to have seen them edited a bit better and organized differently such as by location or even in chronological order. I am giving 4 stars because the idea of Extra-terrestrial interactions fascinates me but the Author could have done more to captivate readers by interjecting their opinions about each experience. I wanted to know what other possible explanations there could have been. Some of the accounts are very disturbing and were left so open-ended that the reader is left feeling like they must have skipped a page or two, somehow. Whitley Strieber has written many "encounter books that are in my opinion, flawlessly presented. I would have given 5 stars if this book had been structured in that fashion. Otherwise, the content again is the stuff that makes people afraid of the dark and makes us feel the need to leave a light on when we go to bed at night.
"Horror in the Woods" is a compilation of scary stories as uncovered by independent researcher and author Steph Young. True to form, she has gathered a collection of stories of creepy experiences, disappearances, and deaths that have happened when people enter the woods. It's easy to put these off one by one as someone's exaggerated imagination, but the author presents each story in a factual way that has you wondering if all of these stories are really made up, or if there is a grain of truth in them...and by the time you finish reading the last page, you have to realize that even that tiny grain of truth is enough to make you never want to go in the woods alone - or even with someone else - again. The scary movies have it right - there are horrors in the woods you don't want to experience, but if you do, Steph Young probably wants to hear your story!
Steph Young is pretty well-regarded for shedding light on some of the creepiest and most unsettling unsolved mysteries and tales that have hit mass media, and so many more that haven’t. Her writing is unique, smart, and very very captivating. That is precisely what readers will find in “Horror in the Woodsâ€, yet another one of her books that will leave your mind filled with some very unsettling images and thoughts as you try and fall asleep upon reading some of the stories that are contained within these pages. Steph is truly a brilliant writer who is able to capture her reader not just with her fantastic writing style, but also with the stories themselves. You won’t be able to put this one down.
