The author opens the book by saying that it will not teach you everything you need to know but that she hopes it will give you a solid foundation from which to spring and give you direction for further study. The book begins opens with a discussion on getting ready to create that includes guest essays by Janine Leblan who talks about Overcoming Fear, Laura Cater-Woods tells you "Yes, You are Creative" and Hollis Chatelain talks about "Doing the Work". The second chapter in this book introduces you to the Elements of Art sarting with some guidelines on how to do the exercises and materials and tools and then moves into talking about elements for the textile artist which include texture, shape, line, color and value. Chapter three deals with principle of design covering unity and variety, focal point, balance and symmetry, scale and proportion, depth and space, motion, and rhythm. Chapter four focuses on using a 45 minute a day exercise to explore all of the subjects covered in the previous chapters and includes a student gallery to illustrate the results. The book closes with a chapter on evaluation and critique to help you evaluate your own work and how to interpret the opinions of others. This is achieved with several gallery style pages of the authors work accompanied by questions to ask as you view the piece.While this is a well written book filled with lots of beautiful work it does lack the in depth look at any of the topics covered in the second and third chapter which deal with the elements of art and the principles of design. However, it does, as the author states in the beginning of the book give you a basic foundation from which to work forward from.Full color photographs and the authors easy conversational tone make it an easy enjoyable read.
Just got this after all the rave reviews posted here and am disappointed. Was expecting a good intro into techniques and possibilities opened up by quilting as art, but instead it seems to be some very basic art 101 (color, texture, depth, composition) with examples that just happen to be made in fabric, but could just have easily been painted.I also found the squeaky spiral binding to be irritating, and the design of the book in general (splashy borders, colored boxes of text, many font changes) as well, but that is a personal perferencevand would not be a deal breaker if the content had been what I was expecting.
I am new to the arts and have been confused time and time again by the books and articles I've read on art theory. I knew that to produce work that went beyond crafting, I would need to understand what makes a project pleasing by using art theory. Now I've found Lyric Kinard and art theory has become understandable and, therefore, usable. I started the book with focal point because I thought I had an understanding of the concept but still had trouble using it successfully. After reading Lyric's explanation of focal point, I had a much better understanding and felt confident that I could create projects with a focal point of my choice. I thought, "Wow, this lady is really a great teacher." Later I found out she won a prestigious teaching award. I immediately went to her web site and signed up for her newsletter.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the principles behind a successful project, who wants to make decisions based on art theory rather than trial and error. Lyric helped me to take charge of my project decisions by giving me a beginning foundation in art theory. It builds up your confidence when you know why you are choosing this over that. Do yourself a favor. If you didn't and can't attend art school, let Lyric Kinard teach you the basics. I did.
This book covers so many things including inspiration and developing your own creativity. But what I liked the most is the information on the elements of art and principles of design which give visual examples and teach you why one is better than another simply and clearly. There are also exercises throughout for hands-on experience. There are no long, expensive lists of things you must buy to do these exercises which is a nice surprise since so many books start with pages and pages of "must haves" which usually make the projects seem hopeless and impossible. If you don't deal with criticism well, there is also a section on that.
Started browsing the book...I like the set up of it...some descriptive writing to motivate and explain but then nice lessons for practice...cant wait to try some of the ideas out...
For a beginning art quilter this book is terrific. It walks you through numerous processes and ideas with tutorials to work on and improve your skills. Even my more experienced friends love this book.
Excellent resource for the beginner art quilter with no formal training in color. It takes you through step by step to find the artist inside you. Great addition to my quilting library.
Great resource book for anyone in the fabric arts who didn't go to college for tars. Inspirational and useful resource.
