I was introduced to this book through my book club and what a gem it turned out to be. Bligh is synonymous with Australian history - his amazingfeats which are well delineated in this writing really capture the imagination in such a way that you feel you are actually part of the experience. My knowledge of Bligh was primarily centred around the the mutiny on the 'Bounty' so it was quite a revelation to realise what an extraordinary man he was. The navigational charts and maps that he was responsible for have been invaluable since he created them - his seamanship was second to none. This book not only brought to life a career at sea but it also touched on Bligh's home and family life. I think the entire book was very well balanced and I found it very hard to put down. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to read and enjoy Mundle's thoughts on an extremely influential but often maligned hero.
This is an incredible story. The book starts out slow but once Bligh is on the Endeavor in an effort to bring bread foot back the story comes to life. It was frustrating to not understand the real causes of the mutiny. Perhaps even Bligh never understood but some piece of the puzzle is missing. Either Bligh changed his leadership style or the real cause of the mutiny remains a puzzle.
Very, very good.Rob Mundle is among my favourite authors and he seems to get better at each outing, although I suspect that he will eventually run out of subjects. Highly recomended for anyone who likes a story with a touch of salt to it.
I'm so glad I read this book. Bligh was not how the movies portrayed him. He deserves much greater recognition for his amazing feats of navigation, his skills as a cartographer and a fair and progressive captain in a navy renowned for corporal punishment. In actual fact he had far fewer men flogged than Captain Cook did.
.. once I stared reading this excellent book by Rob Mundle, I could not put the book (iPad) down, every page gave a new aspect of William Bligh that has truly placed him in the annals of fame as one of the most prolific, adventurous, master mariners the world has seen. I thoroughly recommend this book including some of the reference books he acknowledges.Of note is The Bounty: The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty
Compelling reading...well researched and presented. It mskes you want to read the other books in the series. Well done Rob
I was enthralled from chapter 1 and couldn't put it down, reading all day until finished. It totally changed my opinion of Bligh, he was not the tyrant the movies made him out to be. Rob Mundle wrights in a very compellling way, easy to read and understand. A must read
An interesting look at a man ofttimes mis-represented. Rob Mundle has examined 'the other side' of Bligh's personality to reveal a brilliant person. Great read for anyone interested in 'where and what we come-from'. Although this book spdends minimal time on Bligh's Australian sojour, it shows the character and fortitude of out early Governor.
